Never trust anyone. Even though this sounds like common sense, some people are just too trusting.

Hope you enjoy your DayZ experience as much as I do.

Whitelisting is just a way for people to keep their servers secure. Ususally there is an application process, and then your credentials are added to a list which the server checks when connections are made. If you're not on the list, you're not getting on the server.

This site provides a good variety of explanations and tips.

Sacriel42 posted this video on YouTube posted quite a long time ago. The game has had several updates since then, but it is a really good demonstration and explanation of how the inventory system works, along with a couple of other tips.

Going into Arma II and experimenting with the tutorials/missions is a great way to learn as well. Turning off the music in audio options in DayZ makes it easier to hear other players/less creepy. Turning up your gamma/brightness in video settings on night time servers can help you see better, but some players consider this cheating.

Hope this helps! Best of luck in Chernarus!

If someone asks you to go to Cherno, don't go to cherno :P

Trust is a huge thing in DayZ. Always mention you are friendly, and even after that, when you bump into other players, aim at them, tell them to drop their weapons, and make sure they are friendly. Or vice versa. It could save your skin.

Whenever you see a chopper or hear gunshots, hit the ground and scan your surroundings for a while. Last thing you want is to be spotted by a ghillie sniper (camo guys that are very hard to spot) or get destroyed by a chopper gunner.

Also, whenever you hear flies, it usually means someone has died near you, as with the shots, also go prone for a bit or crouch to make sure whoever killed that person is long gone.

Ammo is important. Don't waste shots. And if you can, don't shoot too often unless it's 100% necessary. Other players and zombies can hear the shots and go towards your direction.

Food consumption. Don't eat or drink until your meters are below 1/4 or flashing. It's more efficient and to no ill effect. Use them at the last minute and you save time and food.

Vehicles. as with guns, they make a lot of noise and you are visible from quite a long distance. If you have one, take the backroads and avoid the main highways.

At night: Flashlights, flares and glowsticks. These make you extremely visible at night, so unless it's pitch black, try to navigate by turning on and off your flashlight, or if you're lucky, get a nightvision set.

When it's full moon, I wouldn't really bother using a flashlight as much. Simply heighten your brightness and gamma to see better.

That's pretty much it.

Enjoy the game! :)

Advice! woo yeah..

You will be amazed how close you can prone to zombies.

At night chuck a flare then hit the ground. if you have a plan you are good to go.

If you try to put your handgun in your pack, so you can use your torch, make sure it's not full! or it's goodby .45 automatic....

If you get caught in the open by a zombie just run. You probaly won't be able to whack it close up. Just run.

Want to lose the trail of zombies? Zigzag through a cluster of pine trees and then prone away then crouch and run for it.

If you are on a server with name plates you are NOT safe in the dark. You may think no one can see you but your name plate

will give you away. (dumb eh...)

Sorry about the info load. I just got caried away!

hmmm...

Mr Amway.

I would say find food before weapons. You don't have to go into a town to find food ... or anything else. Industrial buildings on the outskirts of cities and towns and all by themselves sometimes, can contain pretty much everything you need.

A hatchet can be the best silenced weapon; carry a handgun as backup.

Not everyone is a bloodthirsty killer, but getting close enough to determine who is who will get you hurt or killed. When in doubt, "Charlie Out" (run like hell). Also, some DayZ players like to play headgames i.e. they will deceive you after acting like a buddy. Best to have a friend in game with you to cover your back if you doubt a person's honesty, or character.

Most will tell you not to shoot zombies, or that you are not playing "right" if you do. Sooner or later you will have to shoot your way out.

If you get trapped in a buidling by zombies - a barracks or apartments, etc. - just find the furthest back corner from the closest door and lay down. Often the zombies will come into the room a few feet and then do an about-face.

Most important: develop your own play style; veteran tips are useful in the beginning of your DayZ life, but you'll have more fun doing it "your way".

Simple when you find someone get them to drop their gun and lie down so you can search them after you're done out a stick of morphine in their bag and break their legs ohh and don't kill unarmed players
