Hopes for a darker future

Recommended Posts

So right now i think DayZ just looks and acts too silly, will it be any scarier and bloodier in SA?

The zombies are just gray-skinned people in perfectly intact farmers clothing rather than being more believable zombies, having giant chunks of meat missing from their bodies with clothes that have rip marks and stains all over them.

And the sounds are just cartoony, the zombies sound constipated and high-pitched, and because of that they are also annoying to listen to rather than scary, and when they hit you it sounds like someone smacking a beanbag chair against a piece of wood, and they also shouldn't be smacking you at all, they should be clawing and biting, and when your character breaks their leg they sound like they only stubbed their toe.

Lastly is obviously the environment, the most decrepit and degraded thing about the area around you are exploded cars (Zombies have explosives?) and small piles of rubble and rebar.

This isn't even supposed to be a horror game, you know. It's striving to become an authentic survival simulator, simulating the aftermath of a worldwide disaster.

The zombies are just a more exiting/mainstream disaster to add to the game than, say, a realistic nuclear winter or a worldwide, society-toppling financial depression. It's partly the zombies that got DayZ the attention it did, so Rocket decided to stick with them.

The zombies are the reason for way more attention than that, and any hopes of 100% realism Rocket wanted are flat out impossible because of the subject matter he chose, it's plain and simple, but people are so caught up in what the very basic and raw idea was that they are blind to more detailed and complicated ideas, because thinking is hard.

And before I get another proud speech this was not entirely directed at your post, rather an abundance of like posts.

This just in: ROCKET ANNOUNCES ALL ZOMBIES WILL HAVE POPTART BODIES, RUN AROUND SHITTING RAINBOWS, PLAYING OBNOXIOUS JAPANESE TUNES ON REPEAT.

How's that for a darker Day Z? Terrifying.

Sir that is a very innopropriate idea, how dare you discuss that around the children

So basically you're saying zombies (or the infection portrayed in DayZ) aren't realistic so we should throw out all plausibility and go with whatever you think would make for a scarier game?

How about you go make your own arma2 mod, if you think he's doing it all wrong.

I think there needs to be a drastic overhaul on the zombie/zed/walker type.

I don't remember seeing female zombies - where are they? are we on some strange planet where only men live there?

I don't remember seeing children zombies - and if you want to be super immersive and realistic and scientific you should better have children zombies, yeah it's shocking, but you shot a kid in the face in TellTales walking dead. So it's not really that controversial.

Different types of mobility dependant on zed type ; for example; a fatty zed should have a reduced move speed over say, a well built black man zed, same goes for children zeds.

tldr: zed models need to have a more of an accurate reflection of the diversity of real world body types/ sizes and ages.

So you really don't know what a virus is. Okey. Let me explain, a virus is not alive. It doesn't consume anything. It is impossible for a virus to consume flesh.

Leprosy is caused by a bacteria (two different gram-positive Mycobacteriums), which is a living organism. HUGE difference.

QED, you're wrong.

Very, very slow. Oh those would be hard to get away from in this game. Unless you want them to increase the zombie count by alot, which will stress the servers even more.

The zombie would have trouble aiming for you, because he can't see how far away you are. So the zombies would be less dangerous then.

But you can't run if you're lacking two arms. Figure out this one for yourself. Again, slow zombies.

No, just no. You wouldn't. Several problems which causes the infected human to be not even slightly close a perfect locomotion. In fact, he would die very fast. Since you didn't know what virus even were, I suggest you start checking out microbiology, because they cause one of the problems.

Well a lot of us care about the lore. We don't want excuses.

Sometimes people don't actully find what's important them, to be the same as what you find important. Don't jugde responses to be flawed, just because they don't fit in your reality.

Don't argue with the moron.

He'll take you down to his level and beat you in prior experience.

I'm fine with the zombies infected, since the virus responsible for the zombification infection and how it works is going to be rooted in reality and real viruses. What I'm objecting to is making the game scary just for the sake of making it scary. You just came across as wanting more scares in the op, which is fine, but I don't think that adding scary elements to a survival game is something the devs should be putting a whole lot of effort into. I'd rather have them focusing on the survival parts.

To be honest I would be fine without the game being all out scary but the reason I suggested making it more so is because it is just so silly now, someone mentioned earlier that it is about the adrenaline and near death experiences along with the difficulty of survival was the point, well for me that all goes out the window when I'm laughing my ass off because about 3 clones of that guy from myth busters are doing the retard sprint after me (Crouching ZOMBIES run animation)

Shrapnell, the point being made is they're NOT zombies, they're infected people. The player character, from what I know, is part of the minority immune to the virus. Those unfortunate souls are still human and require their body to work to some extent, but they're not going to wince at pain and retreat...

People initially came for the "realism" this offered compared to other zombie games, ye? That and the freedom...

Well stick to what's worked...if the virus is to be realistic, which I believe Rocket wants, then they can't be rotting and still running.

No, no, no, I don't care if they're infected, I want them GOD DAMN scary.

I don't care, I just want them frightening.

Q: Are there any plans on making zombies more frightening/scarier than they are now? Not in damage but in looks/sounds. I'm thinking of zombies jumping at you from a dark bush, zombies with open guts, bloodied zombies,.. They really aren't all that scary at the moment.

A: Absolutely. I would rate us as 1/10 for scariness at the moment. I want to go up to at least 7/10

This was in the reddit interview in 2012 if I am correct.
