Ban entries disappearing from Bans.txt

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

I seem to be having a problem with Ban entries disappearing from my Bans.txt file. The strange part is that it only seems to be the entries that I manually put into the file. GUID bans that I put in using RCON, seem to stay just fine. IP Bans that I put into the file manually, keep disappearing after server restarts.

Any help would be appreciated. My server is a standard package public server, hosted by HFB.

Thanks,

Splinter

Just ban everyone by the GUID. Its more effective that way in either case. Also you could try and get the bans.txt file on your pc, and edit it in notepad. After you added what ip´s you want banned, you save and replace the file in your server with the one you edited on the computer.

Greetings V2_Danny, thanks for your reply. Originally, I was using the server control panel to edit the Bans.txt file. Thinking that maybe the save function was failing, I tried using my FTP client (Filezilla) to download the file and edit it locally. Then, I push the file back up to the server and I overwrite the file on the server. Now as I'm typing this, I'm wondering if the server file is in use when I try to overwrite it?

I do find the GUID banning effective, but lately I have had several examples of players getting kicked for Global Bans and reconnecting minutes later with a different GUID, but the same IP Address. That is why I've chosen to include IP level Bans as a part of my strategy in addition to GUID banning.

Regards,

I (we) use Dart for banning people and the occassional manual add ban (through ftp banlist). We ban both ip+guid just to make sure any multi guid hacker at LEAST has a bit more trouble to get back on the server.

I tested adding a few IP addresses when the server was down during a routine restart. They seemed to have stayed in place, so I have a feeling that I was running into a file in use problem.

Thanks for the reply,
