Slow Hordes?

Recommended Posts

A suggestion that has come up many times but regardless is an interesting one to consider, although how feasible it is in terms of coding etc I'm not sure, is what if instead of fast zombies which as "few and far between" we had slow zombies but sizeable hordes of them, at least in certain places.

Towns and cities like Electro and Cherno seem rather devoid of life (no joke intended) when we can assume that these were high traffic areas, places like Devils Castle and Rog could be set up as though valiant but fruitless last stands took place, so when you arrive a horde has followed a group of would be survivors to the castle.

Imagine a jog through a forrest or field on the way to the NWAF only for there to be a sizeable horde of slow moving but plentiful zombies shambling around.

Despite having guns, the ammo required to kill these hordes would be unsustainable and the sheer overwhelming numbers and firearms propensity to attract even more (perhaps larger hordes) would make teamwork and setting up defensive positions all the more important.

On a side note, I know that the enemy NPC are "Infected" rather than zombies so this may not be worth much, but as Max Brooks explains in the zombie survival guide, zombies cannot run, their decomposing muscle tissues and highly damaged nervous systems allow only for crawling or shambling, the true horror of a horde is their numbers, and the fact that they don't need rest you could run for days and they'd still just keep shambling toward where you last were.

Just my take on the debate.

I know I personally like the classic shambling zombie, but if they were slow, they wouldn't make you afraid unless there were a LOT of them. You wouldn't have to spawn as many if you made them take more shots, but if they're slow, head shots are easy. So you would need a sheer hundreds upon hundreds in your specific vicinity to make you shake in your boots. I don't know how processing is divided between the game server and player's computers, but this number of zombies in one area would really slow things down and probably make it unplayable for those with lower end computers. I think it was a decision partly made for the reason that a challenging game like that just isn't feasible in the massive persistent world it is set in.
