I'm a newer player to DayZ and I have been having a lot of trouble getting anywhere close to towns where I can get items. It seems like even if I'm crouched and not running the see me really easily. Any advice?

Im guessing your talking about zombies? As long as its day the are going to see you. Honeslty just outrun them rather then go around them. Run into a building where they can't run and you'll excape

Try going prone and crawling. It's slow, though, and you become less zombie bait and more bandit fodder. As previously mentioned, sometimes its better just to run in. Choose paths that take you through buildings with multiple exits. It's unlikely you'd survive getting cornered in a barracks... ATC towers should also be avoided, the zombies know that the ladder is there...
