Tents, how do they work?

Considering the shitty wheater, especially on northern european & UK servers,I felt that i had to get a tent. One killed bandit later i got my beloved tent and scouted nice camping site out.r

But what are the game mechanics? I can store loot in tents, that much i understood. Will the tent be with me on all servers or just the one i put it up on? I've heard diffrent answers to this. Will tents be persistent after a server crash or restart? Will the tent be visible to other players after i log off? Need these answerd.

P.S I'm going to start playing on southern european servers where the whaether isn't shit all of the time D.S
