AMD GPU Users: Has The Video Memory Setting Changed For You?

Recommended Posts

Am I going madder than usual or has the latest patch changed the behaviour of the Video Memory switch in Options > Video Settings > Advanced?

It used to be that Default gave the highest FPS, now I find Very High gives the best FPS and Default is worse than Low.

The very odd thing is I see this running the Op. Arrowhead SP campaign too..

ARMA and ARMA 2 Op. Arrowhead run via Steam.

DayZ updated and controlled by Dayz Commander.

GPU = Sapphire Radeon 7870 2GHz Edition.

Latest AMD Driver 13.10

ARMA not run on steam

DayZ Commander as updater

I can see that any changes I make through the in-game settings are reflected in the ARMA2OA.cfg file and that setting Video Memory to Default sets "localVRAM=2147483648;" which does equal 2GB.

However, according to MSI Afterburner OSD, this drops the GPU MEM to around 300MB and I get around 15-20 FPS in the woods of Chernarus.

Set Video Memory to Very High and MSI reckons the GPU is using 600+MB and I get 80+ FPS in the woods.

Utterly baffled.

It boosted my FPS with setting the post-processing to low from "off" and adding the FXAA on my HD 6370M, didn't try the video memory though.

BTW, how can I see my drivers version?

Running DXDiag and looking at the Display tab is probably the most universal way.

I'll if my ARMA2 is actually using the Stable or Beta version later as I have the I have the "Replace original ARMA2OA files with Beta so Steam works" box checked in DayZ Commander...

This is definitely something to do with AMD implementation as the exact same thing happens when running the Stable/Vanilla version of ArmA 2OA.

My ArmA2 OA config file shows that ArrmA2 OA is correctly detecting the amount of VRAM my GPU has as it shows 2GB's worth of bytes when set to Default.

However, this appears (looking at MSI Afterburner OSD in-game) to limit the VRAM used to around 500MB and drops my frame rate from 80+ FPS to 20+ FPS.

Selecting Very High sets the VRAM in the config file to less than 2GB (can't remember exact value), but MSI Afterburner shows up to 1400MB of VRAM being used and I get frame rates above 80 FPS in Cherno during daylight.
