Alternative to adding in ragdolls

Recommended Posts

If adding the ragdolls from Arma 3 to Dayz standalone is too difficult than a simple solution is creating Ragdoll like death animations.

Just get the MoCap actor to go completely numb and drop as if he were shot dead , this way we would have realistic death animations that look like ragdolls. I think dayz has 2 animations already like this but you hardly see them.

I think that not having ragdoll makes it harder because things clip through walls and all that.

How I would do ragdolls in the SA is have zombies eat other zombie corpses to clean some of them up so you can have some ambient garbage disposal instead of them sinking into the floor or disappearing completely, because too many ragdolls = worse performance.

when someone gets shot, they wont be thrown away, will only fall down to the ground, ragdoll is only realistic on people shot by a high caliber like a .50, 7.62 (FN FAL) or 12 slug (pellets would only spray down holes to the target, there wouldnt be much impact).

So ragdoll wont be a performance issue, just make it available only for some weapons, pistols, 5.56 assault rifles and snipers wouldnt cause any.

Ragdoll means NOT like the animations where when things die they fall backwards the SAME way every time, or the one when they throw their hands up and fall forward. Ragdoll is just falling randomly all the time.

Well the alternative for ragdolls (if they are not adding it) would have to be to make different animations for deaths by shots in all different locations of the body to simulate a ragdoll.

I'm not very technical to know how this whole thing would work, but I definitely hope they get those animations right.

That would be impractical, expensive, and stupid....

It would still have clipping issues.

The reason the bodies have clipping issues once dead is because they become STATIC. If you've spent time in the editor you know that items that are static do not have physics applied to them- same with the bodies. They are set in a position, so they have to be static or they'll bug out. With ragdolls, it simply makes physics apply, so zombies will slump against walls, instead of going through them, once dead.

The point of ragdoll physics is to make bodies move in a natural looking way so that individual animations are no longer necessary.

Creating hundreds of animations, to trigger depending on the point of impact is NOT a viable alternative.

If adding ragdoll is somewhere in the DayZ dev pipeline, your best bet is to just be patient and see how it goes.

Little flourishes (such as realistic movement) may add to the atmosphere of the game, but they're at the bottom of the pile when it comes to development priority.
