Harvesting Plants

Recommended Posts

When you're traveling out in the forest in the middle of nowhere, there's usually nothing you can find. Forests right now are used for nothing except the use of hiding yourself when traveling from town to town or hiding in a bush when sniping. I think to add to the realism the game, there should be a real reason to go in the forest.

First of all, canned food should be much rarer. In a real apocalypse people would've already scavenged most of the homes and chance of finding food would be rare. To make more of a survival aspect to the game you could scavenge a carrot that no one happened to see off a overgrown garden . When you have no luck finding carrots or other garden plants like turnips, your next option would be to go in the forest. Many harvestable plants would be found there but not all would give you good effects. Knowledge of what plants would be good or bad would help you figure out the edible ones. To figure out which ones are edible. You could find a guide by scavenging telling you what plants are edible raw, cooked or what plant you should never attempt to eat.

Also, there should be natural remedies for infections such as a fever. Tree bark could be chopped off a tree with your axe and you could then chew on it to provide relief. Rare herbs could be found to provide relief too. Another option would be to use your axe to cut down tree branches to create a splint for broken bones if morphine was no option.

Feel feel to leave any of your suggestions on my ideas :)

I'm only on board if hallucigenic mushrooms are available in the ruins of Green Mountain so I can fight off the Mt. Dew god and get into his secret treasure chest, giving me super kickass alien weaponry.

I do like the idea of being able to go into the woods and live, however, a lot of people without any type of guide - would sadly not know what even a wild growing carrot (which I never encountered to be truthful with my adventures into the wild) mush less to decide if they found a wild onion depending on what region you are at, plants vary greatly. Being from the US I would most likely be lost as to the native growings of Cherno - let alone being able to distinct which tree is the needed one to chew on. ;) Given there are some general guide lines - and rules of thumbs in regards to finding tasty treats in the wild, it often takes a experienced guide or plant knower' to figure out if what you are looking at, is what you think you are looking at... if ya follow me.

Given the time line - and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong - the DayZ, the Z is not for zombies - from what I was told, but never felt like looking up to see if this was true, it stands for Zero. Thus giving us Day Zero (the start of the infection and event)... would be hell of tons of food.

A good spin off on this idea would be to make "dooms day prepers" caches that we could stumble upon, either in urban or forest areas, people are always "preparing" as crazy as it sounds.

I've seen enough plant collecting etc in RPGs next thing we know we will be brewing fucking potions. Or looking for Resident Evil green herbs.

I like this idea. I know if i was killed on Day Zero of the infection, the first person to loot my house would have 100% chance of military grade weapons spawn, lol.

A very scary bunch, on the TV series I got the impression most weren't just preparing for a doomsday they were sort of looking forward to it.....

This idea has my nooby blessing... and my beans.

speaking of which, because we eat so many beans, our characters should have really bad farts that give away our position.
