Vertisce 158 Posted February 7, 2013 I did some searching on Google and never found what I was looking for with this. I am wondering if the Standalone DayZ client will be able to support larger maps? Our current maps are big...but not big enough in my opinion. I can walk from one end of the map to the other in a matter of 30 minutes if I cared to. Water sources are never more than a minute away, food is always easily and readily available and the towns are all far too close together and too small in most cases. This is probably asking a lot but it would be amazing to be in a world that is at least 10 times larger than Chernarus with larger cities and greater distances between points of interest. Vehicles would be far more useful and desired. Gas stations would actually have more of a use. There would actually be a point to carrying 3 canteens and 3 baked beans in your pack while you wander around. It's a bit of a dream I am sure...but has there been any information on just how large of a map the Standalone will support if there is any change at all? janus0104 212 Posted February 7, 2013 (edited) They did show us in the latest video that they added the entirety of Utes to the southern end. So, hopefully, they'll add more inland land mass aswell.*EDIT: I was too slow :( Edited February 7, 2013 by Elvaron
aussiestig 681 Posted February 7, 2013 If you can walk from kamenka to NEAF in under 30 minutes, then I want whatever beans you're eating.
TacticalN29 89 Posted February 7, 2013 If you can walk from kamenka to NEAF in under 30 minutes, then I want whatever beans you're eating.This. But yes, I think more maps that are connected to Chernarus are part of Rocket's ideas.
Vertisce 158 Posted February 7, 2013 Ok...so I exaggerated just a bit on how long the walk takes. Either way...you see my point. Utes is not exactly a huge expansion to the map. It's a pretty small island really and if I recall correctly it fits right into the current map, just out in the expanse of water.I think it would be cool to literally take an entire day to get from one end of the map to the other without stopping. Just get lost in an expansive territory. One thought that crossed my mind was to give you a prompt when you hit the edge of a map to "zone" into the next map that might be housed on another server or something. This would allow you to make the total map almost limitless in size while keeping each square zone of a map small enough for a server to manage. The thought faded fast because it would kill immersion I think and a lot of people might not like it. But it's a thought at least.
Blindingsun 233 Posted February 7, 2013 I normally run from Kamenka all the way to the north east dam on start. it does not take 30 mins. it takes more than an hour.the map is sufficiently big on foot
Fraggle (DayZ) 15720 Posted February 7, 2013 I'm sure everyone would like as big a map as possible, including the devs. There's a lot to think about though. The vanilla Chernarus map took 2 years to make, and the larger a map gets the more resources it needs to run it. I read that the Arma 3 engine can support maps of up to 500km sq so there's always potential, but these things take long time, if you want to be playing the SA this year, you're gonna have to get used to Chernarus +. YorkEagle 23 Posted February 7, 2013 i always wanted to see the arma 1 map ’sahrani’ get the dayz makeover! walking from the southern shore all the way up to the northern tip of the map felt like it took a day! that is one huge map! maybe too big?
exo.geni@hotmail.it 13 Posted February 7, 2013 I think that Chernarus should be expanded North/West, there is already a lot of space with nothing in there. Personally I would like to see a huge wild space North, and further North a fairly big city (I don't mind if it's just a copy/paste of cherno). Would be cool to have a goal that is far away, so that you can really enjoy your trip.
Vertisce 158 Posted February 7, 2013 (edited) I agree that the original ArmA map would be a lot of fun for DayZ.It was pretty small though...smaller than Chernarus anyway. Edited February 7, 2013 by Vertisce
Cap'n (DayZ) 1827 Posted February 7, 2013 I know for a fact that the game can support 400km square maps, and how hard would it be to add a little more space onto the map? Be kind of cool having spawn points on the coast and in the far North. That might make finding friends a PITA, but hey, it would sure add a great sense of scale. But I feel fine with how the map is, and like that the Devs are adding Utes into it. Make a cool place to have a base, and even better, Navy Seal style water infiltrations on the PBX. janus0104 212 Posted February 7, 2013 Be kind of cool having spawn points on the coast and in the far North.I always felt a few spawn points should be in little towns next to abandoned houses. Like your character had barricaded themselves in the basement of a house, but now that supplies have run out they have to get out. But, we'll see.
