What if like minecraft a tutural map, where a gun is placed near by with essentials. Have ai's running around just to get a feel for the game and controls, and when starting in a real server do not let items carry over. Its not a perfect thought just it would seem very helpful to me and many others who will still be at a disadvantage to better players. Maybe make the tut. map just one city or just a tut. land so the players get no hiding spots on the real maps???

In DayZ, the steep learning curve is part of the charm.

I seriously doubt their would ever be a tutorial, even offline. The entire premise is built around the idea of a harsh and unforgiving experience.

ArmA 2 has built in campaigns and an armoury, where you can get a feel for controlling your avatar and get an idea of the functions of cover and sensible movement.

The only thing that really has to be experienced first hand is Zed behaviour, and that's all going to be changed, so no biggy.

EDIT: If you don't already own ArmA 2: CO, and you're just waiting for standalone to release, you can get ArmA 2 free HERE

Could work to give people a feel of the game but at the moment there are other ways you could learn the ropes. Learn to use guns by using Arma 2 Editor, spawn a bunch of weapons and some people to shoot at and get a feel for the controls. Go through the Arma 2 tutorials to learn general controls, heli flying etc. Jot down the controls on a piece of paper for later. Also jot down all relevant info for DayZ such as how to open a bag, drop items etc. so you can quickly glance over it.

As for the zombies, join an empty server and try your best to survive. Each time you die, figure out why you died and try again without repeating that mistake. Then once you feel a bit more confident, join a server with around 10-15 people, max 20 people.

Stay there and don't join public 60 man servers anytime soon as they suck balls atm with the hacking that is running rampant. Whitelisted servers and servers with active admins can remedy this situation if you're interested in playing with larger player count so they'd be a better bet.

There are Non-PVP(PVE) servers around here and there. If a new player needs a tutorial or something of the sort, they could join one of those until they get used to the game.
