Sleep and how it would work.

Hi there, i thought of an idea for how to implement sleep/tiredness into the game. I will just put it in list form as i think it´s easier to get an overview over.

Ideas for sleep in dayz:

  • Sleep would function as food, drink and so on.
  • Physical activity such as running depletes your sleep meter.
  • When tired/sleepy you would have trouble holding your gun, you can not run so fast and so on.
  • To relieve sleep you can sleep in tents or in building using a sleepingbag.
  • Energi drinks and instant coffee mixed with water woulld also relieve sleep.
  • Possibility to pass out when to tired.

That´s what i have so far, you are all welcome to fill in with more ideas.

I think it would be a great idea too implement some kinda sleep/tiredness system, so it will add to the realism of dayz.

Like Dean said, he would like too keep it as realistic as possible, and then there definetly would have to be some kind of system regarding sleep and tiredness :)

Maybe a people's characters could also regain "energy" while logged out of the server, if you go into a tent or sleepingback, and then log out. For instance if you have to get some sleep yourself after a long night of DayZ :P

I will have to completely disagree with this given the fact that players (read: the real people behind the avatar) have to sleep. From a metagame standpoint your real physical condition already plays a role in your gaming from a mental fatigue and alertness standpoint so there really isn't any reason to have an analogous system in the game for that.

Well I play on very populated server where getting water or food is actually hard (bandits are camping all supermarkets and big cities). And when you try to get one from a barn or low value spawn building you will run so much that you will have to immidetly go look for another one.

Wow, okey. You must be really unlucky then, i also play on populated servers, but i can still easily find food in the smaller cities, around lakes etc.

Tho bandits aren't camping supermarkets on the servers i play on. but i guess things are relative. :P

Well as Toft said the developers want the game to be as realistic as possible and in the real world you need to sleep to regain your strength.

We could implement sleeping for logging out of a server. When you want to disconnect, you need to hide and fall asleep. This takes some seconds, which would be a good thing against battleloggers. After shooting (the red blinking G17) you would be too scared to go to sleep for some secs. This sounds logic for me.

But the analogous drink/eat system is okay?^^

I like the idea very much. Especaily the idea with the energy and coffe. But then we need bigger(more realistic) backbags^^

The drink and eat system is hardly analogous unless you are suggesting that sleeping takes an insignificant fraction of the amount of time it takes to accomplish in reality, in which case it's just one more item of housekeeping to do.

With respect, I think we all log into a game to actually play the game not... not play the game.

IT should be part of the game in the same way food and drink is .

You should have to sleep for ( very ) brief periods of time , maybe a few minutes once every four or five in game hours ( maybe sleeping in a tent or bed can reduce this time ) , to stave off sleep deprivation and its ill effects , like slowing down reaction times , microslips , or even passing out .

This would force you to find a relatively safe place where you can catch some shut eye , or have some one guard you as you sleep .

Loud noises could wake you and interrupt your sleep , or some one could even murder you , or steal all your gear in your sleep ( nasty ) .

You basically "sleep" when you're not online, yeah? In fact, my public hive character is in eternal sleep now. I wonder how many days he has.

this would slow down player movement and activity, it would be a burden, maybe if laying down a person can regenerate blood a little, starving comes slower, so if you are waiting for some the sleep state can be nice if you know no one will atack... it could be interesting, if it made more sense than having to shit.... imagine a bar of the need to shit, and the one to sleep, these things could be more of a choice that if done gives something to the player, like hunger can be ignored, walk faster, or just less hungry, whatever, but reducing the freedom of the player just for a better simulation is to me a bad game design....

this is my opinion, if crapping has something to boost the experience than its ok, i think shitting makes a little more sense than sleeping, inactivity sucks

I see sleep as something that you need to do after X number of ingame hours But...

I also see it as ways to help fight a cold by getting some rest and also it should help increase your blood number.

To keep people from taking naps to increasing your blood number over and over- there is a set value that can only be gained every 6 hours or what ever number of hours would fit the mechanic.

The longer you sleep- up to 5 minutes if you want- the more blood you get back since it will give a X value per sec/or min. Also the more of the 5 minutes you are sleeping/rest- the better your body fights off a cold- might remove a few of the effects on the players for a few mins or make the effects on the player happen in longer intervals verse couching and shaking all the time.

Conclusion- this gives a benefit to sleeping but also still enforce that players should take naps-sleep of they will be forced to by passing out from exhaustion.

you want it real? better dont fall asleep when you are seriously hurt. and since when you regain blood if you take a rest for 5 min.?

trouble is cherno has a real time day/night cycle, so for it to fit the realism of the game you'd be needing 4 - 6 hours sleep every 24 hours

The games day night cycle is real enough , but the bodily function cycle ( eating drinking etc ) sure isn't , and for the games sake , it really shouldn't be .

I think adding in sleep would make for even more interesting situations , and people complaining about this "too hard" stuff , as the mod is now , to survive is easy sauce , it's not difficult at all .

I think we are naming it incorrectly- It's not Sleep, its more of a Nap.

In a high stress environment where you sleep with one eye open at all times....many people would find it hard to get a full night's sleep.

So we are looking at catnaps- in real life this would be 2hr -3hr naps. In the game you can lay down and rest (nap) for up to 5 minutes (number is just there as estimate)- some players will do 20 seconds , others might do 2 minutes. You will find some players simply taking naps while they try to figure out where to go when talking on team speak or a player just thinking where to hit for loot or safety.

The idea of the return of blood is based on the idea that Blood would return over time since you are bandage, but factors like sickness and others might complicate things.

So the nap would have some beneficial effect verse saying oh main have to lay down but what do i get from this?

This should be about Naps not sleep.

So much bullshi in this threat.

Whats the problem? After running 5km your Charackter gets tired an needs to rest a little bit. While he is tired he cant sprint and hold breath for aim not that long. You need to trink a coffe or a energy drink or take a powernap for getting fit again. If you ignore the tiredness you charackter will pass out after running another 5km and has aiming behavior like while freezing.

It do not slow down the gameplay or something like that.

But yes i know... it is too hard for you pussys here.... go play sims...

So much games already using this.
