How to activate all cores?

Recommended Posts

I have recently been looking at ways to increase my fps, and I have run across a number of helpful YouTube videos. Some of them show how to put commands in the start-up options on steam, one of which (cant remember the exact thing to type) ws supposed to make the game use all four of your processor cores. I have a 1.9 GHz quad-core A8 in my laptop, and I would like to be able to do this for my game. However, whenever I play DayZ, I prefer to find a server from the list on Dayz Commander and launch my game from there rather than launching ArmA2CO through steam. Is there a way I can activate all of my cores when launching through here? Also, are there any other ways besides in-game options that I can increase my fps (I'm already aware of RAMDisk, but it confuses me, if anyone knows a for-dummies sort of video that would be appreciated. The one I saw was by a really bad explainer.)

My Specs

quad core AMD A8-4500M 1.9 GHz with Radeon™ Graphics

AMD Radeon HD 7640G

8GB DDR3 RAM

Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit

512 MB dedicated video RAM

Pixel Shader/ Vertex shader version 5.0

Let me know if you need more.

P.S.- I understand great fps is a lot to ask of 1.9 GHz and integrated graphics, but I'm not bathing in cash and my PC is a laptop, not a desktop, so hardware upgrades are pretty much out of the question. I'm looking for FREE (catch the emphasis?) software or tweaks that are both safe and can add to my framerate. All of my drivers are up to date

I'm pretty sure that processor must simply not be powerful enough to run it!

What FPS do you get in game currently?

Your processor is fine.

You need to get a dedicated graphics card. The 7640g you list is an integrated Trinity APU (processor card).

Pop in a decent video card (starting around $120-ish),add another case fan ($15) to keep things cool and you'll be ok

1.9 ghz isnt fine

people are struggling to run this game on i7s with 3.4ghz and higher

although i do agree with u that a "real" gpu is needed

I play on a Sony Vaio i7 2.0 and 8gb RAM and ti seems to work fine for me. I'm also thinking of doing the RAMDISK trick but I'm gonna wait for SA and see if the optimization works for my system.

btw the launch parameter to activate all core is

-cpucount=4 (1,2,4,6 depending on ur cpu)

BUT

as of 1.61 beta patch for arma 2, it automatically detects ur cpu specs, and uses all the cores anyways (or at least so i remember reading somewhere)

I understand a dedicated card would be great, but i just dont know if I can. I'm on a laptop that I bought pre-built from best buy. I have used a few websites that claim they can tell you what kind of performance I will get and they tell me that I should be getting 10-15 fps more than I am, even with integrated graphics. Every other game i've played o here (including some recommending better graphics cards than DayZ) have run fine. My point is, even if it is a hardware issue, I can't just go out and start spending hundreds on parts.

Does the patch automatically install? If not, how do I do it myself?

What FPS do you get in game currently?

I currently get about 20-25 fps i the wilderness, and 15-20 in towns (mostly to the higher end of those. I have seen it reach up to 30 on servers with like 2 or 3 other people while i'm in the middle of the forest, but that's rare and nothing really exciting happens there). If I try to join a server with 30+ players, that decreases by about 10.

I really do think the processor is fine. I have run games asking for 3.0 Ghz processors (portal 2, for example) on high settings at 40-50 fps. I've even gotten Minecraft up to 300 when I put everything in low (not really a gret feat for a graphics card, but still). I just want to know how I can tack on as much as possible to avoid lag in key moments and improve overall smoothness.

portal 2 is a really light game even on highs - my pc would run it with around 200-300fps, but arma 2 only gives about 40fps in towns

i didnt realize u had a laptop, there isnt really a way to upgrade a laptop, unless upgrade from a laptop to pc...

gl

optimize ur game (pm me if u dont know what to do)
