CZ 550 - finding distance with hunting scope

Recommended Posts

CZ 550, hunting rifle used by farmers to protect sheeps from wolfs or by rich people to hunt lions in Africa or deers and bears in North America and as such have attached hunting scope in game. This hunting scope as designed to aim at animals that are more width then tall has only horizontal mil dots.

But in DayZ we want to use it to hunt players (humans), this is how to do it:

First, how mil dots in CZ 550 hunting scope works. They are in shape of 9 lines with are respectively:

| | | | | | | | |

0; 0.5; 1; 1.5; 2; 2.5; 3; 3.5; 4 mil dot

Human model in game is about 60cm (0.6m) width in shoulders/chest area when looking from front/back.

So, if you see player from front/back with CZ 550 scope and he takes 2 lines space ( 0.5 mil dot) then he is 0.6 x 1000 / 0.5 = 600 / 0.5 = 1200 meters away from you ( range of CZ 550 is said to be 800 meters btw.)

If front/back of player takes space of 3 lines (1 mil dot) then he is 0.6 x 1000 / 1 = 600 / 1 = 600 meters away from you. Zero scope at 600 meters and kill him.

If his front/back in space of 4 lines (1.5 mil dot) then he is 0.6 x 1000/ 1.5 = 600 / 1.5 = 400 meters away from you. Zero scope and 400 meters and kill him.

And so on.

Now if you see player from side, model width is about 20cm (0.2m) here. So:

If he takes 2 lines (0.5 mil dot) then he is 0.2 x 1000 / 0.5 = 200 / 0.5 = 400 meters away from you.

If he takes space of 3 lines (1 mil dot) then he is 0.2 x 1000 / 1 = 200 /1 = 200 meters away from you.

If he takes space between first 2 lines then he is 0.2 x 1000 / 0.25 = 200 /0.25 (mil dot) = 800 meters away from you - maximal CZ 550 range.

And so on.

Now if you see player from an angle then you will have to assume yourself if he is 30cm (0.3m), 40cm (0.4m) or 50cm (0.5m) width in chest/shoulders area.

If you see player prone in (un)lucky position you will be able to use his height (180cm/1.8m) in horizontal mil dot scope.

Ofcourse I am aware that you can use map or range finder to know distance from target or use military sniper rifles with scopes designed to kill humans (that use vertical mil dots, used for target height) with is much more simplier and effective when it comes to killing humans that are more tall then width but I saw lots of people talking that you can't find distance from the target with CZ 550 scope or that CZ 550 have no mil dots, with is not true and I wanted to show that.

It is also worth noting that you may also measure things like doorways, signs, window frames, or anything else that has a standard size to calculate distance. Of course a door on building 1 may not be the same width as one on building 2, and angle matters on the width measurement.

I don't know the measurements, but if you're a player who likes the 550 as a primary it may be worth finding out.

This also applies to true mil-dot reticles, and since they have vertical stadia you can measure the height of a door or window regardless of angle.
