Combat, Bandits, and You!

So I really dislike the ability of the afraid to use combat logging to their advantage so easily. As long as you haven't shot in the past 30 seconds or whatever it is, you can log out just fine! And meanwhile, at least on some servers, your person "stays" behind momentarily and people may waste their ammunition shooting someone that isn't there anymore.

Also, there should be some sort of cooldown period once you log out, where you are still inside the game, and can be killed at least by players. I think being able to be attacked by zombies would be a bit much, but that would be acceptable if we could only have both or nothing.

I was wondering if it's possible, which I'm sure it is if people are using Combat Logs, to engage people into combat when THEY are shot at. I think a faster cooldown for the combat restrictions of logging out should be faster when you are not the one engaging, but nonetheless, if a shot lands within 10, even 30 meters, you should be put into combat defensively.

In this same regard, I think it'd be great if there could be some sort of revamp to the bandit/hero system. What I'm suggesting, if the above is possible, is that essentially any kill once you have been put into defensive combat would not count against you in terms of your humanity. I think this would completely change how at least some players would consider other players they meet randomly.

I think that the bandit system should also incorporate distance of kill into it's humanity loss. Say, within that defensive range of 10-30m, kills another person, both were out of combat. A close proximity kill like that would essentially lose the attacker half of their humanity [incase it was some freak accident with an axe ;)]. And in the same respect, a kill of say, 500m+ would actually lose all of their humanity, as it was clearly a cold blooded kill, long range, without attempting to engage the person being attacked in dialogue.

I think this would completely change how players go about playing in the new standalone. Instead of everyone just assuming everyone else is a bandit, players would be punished (humanity-wise) more appropriately, rather than just killing a few people and turning into a bandit, when those few people were killed in self-defense. Also, this could allow for the Hero system to be more representative of killing actual bandits, instead of just running into someone who defended themselves against other players, and got turned into a bandit.

Just a thought not sure if it's even possible, keep up the great work!

combat logs to affect you already when you are shot at don't they? I get the flashing red gun icon when im being fired at or even when some throws a smoke grenade near me.....

I don't believe that getting anything thrown or shot at you puts you into combat, the red flashing gun. At least I have never noticed that, if that was the case people shouldn't be able to combat log, ever.

Throwing anything, swinging your axe or crowbar, anything like that will put you into combat though.

If we have a gauge when players combat log (Flashing gun icon) perhaps the player who logs can drop all their gear? that would serve the pussies right.

When they log back in, they are defenseless and no gear.

that or kill them dead.

Well that would work, it would be a deterrent against people combat logging, since they would lose their stuff. But that wouldn't be nearly rewarding as being able to kill them!
