I'm guessing that some issues are as a result of the latest dayz patch REQUIRING THE LATEST ARMA2 CLIENT BETA PATCH. This is a bit messy and so I'm not surprised if newcomers are having issues.

The easy way is to follow instructions at

http://dayz.sykotix.com/arma-ii-beta-client-install/

Follow the instructions carefully. Note that the script provided will start the game in windowed mode. You can hot Alt-Enter to go full screen or edit the .cmd file and delete "-window"

I have a decent built computer and I've ran games that are better than DayZ with no problem. This fixed my constant lag issue that I have been having since the 1.7 patch.
