Am I doing something wrong, or is it a nightmare to switch between flashlight/gun

So nightime is pitch black which is fine, you cannot hold a gun and flashlight at the same time which is fine, you can't run with a flashlight which is starting to border on retarded but fine.

But in order to switch between flashlight and a gun do i really have to keep bringing up the inventory screen and placing the flashlight in my backpack/remove gun from backpack? Is there no way to streamline this? My character model has tons of pouches and pockets but he can't just stick his flashlight in one? It has to get placed neatly into the main compartment of his pack? Does my character have OCD?
