Newbie question: Same character, different server?

Hi! Started playing yesterday and have a noobish question.

I've read that if you create a character on a server connected too a hive (no idea what that is) the same character is transfered to another server if you decide to switch. But I have tried now on several servers (i made a mistake of creating my char on a low pop server) and it dosent work. I've read that if the server has a server nr then its connected to a hive (or is there several hives?). Can someone help a fellow survivor with this dilemma? :)

Servers connected to the main hive will save the same character across all servers. If you join a server with a PRIVATE hive, the character you play is only saved on THAT particular server.

i am new to the dayz mod as well... when you create a character on a hive server and you disconnect your character info will be saved on the hive mainframe... if you connect to a different hive server, your character info should be downloaded. if you connect to a non hive server you start fresh... that should be it, i think... i am not sure so check out other sources. peace out.

Public servers (Hive) -> Main character that appears in all public servers

Private servers (Non-Hive) -> Private Character attached only to that specific server
