Tales of woe from DayZ medics!

Recommended Posts

Well, after a session last night I felt kind of aggravated and decided to post here, because reasons.

I'm currently playing on a Private Hive and most of the guys are pretty friendly, so I don't mind being the resident medic for that server - I've patched up a fair few people and ran quite a few miles to save people in pretty stupid situations. As always, there are those times when a bandit takes advantage of this.

My one rule for running as a medic is to literally carry only the gear needed to fix the guy up and to get there. If someone says they have a broken leg, I'll take one dose of morphine and a water bottle maybe some food. I'll drink and eat before I reach them and then go and fix them up with morphine. ( I might be carrying a hatchet if there are zombies about ) A few times now, I've got shot as soon as the guys patched up and good to go and they have the cheek to type "WTF?!" in side-chat at my lack of loot. ( Even though I tell them I'm carrying only the kit needed to patch them up )

Even so, I'll still go out of my way to medic anyone who needs help on the server, I'm just surprised people will shoot me after patching them up for, at best, a hatchet and at worst, nothing.

So, my dear medical chums, what tales of woe and dread do you have? :)

I went to give someone antibiotics, and they accidentally killed me by opening the door and squishing me into the wall.

Ah, yes...I also got my characters head stuck in the wall at the NWAF yesterday, whilst trying to enter the doorway to the ATC. That was an interesting 5 minutes.

I went to help out a person who yelled for help on the side channel.

He needed morphine because he had fell down some meters from the green mount.

radio tower ladder.

Well, I got to him, patched him up, and look, he headshotted me with a makarov to get MY makarov. O well :D

Try to find methods of administering aid in a way that does not leave you vulnerable to murder. For example: take a decent but common primary (e.g. Winchester), stay near cover, instruct your patient to face away from you and shoulder their primary. If they don't comply then they don't get aid. Once done, tell them to move off slowly without turning around or changing weapons. Keep your sights on them, then back off into your cover and bolt.

Be polite, but firm.

Don't mean to lecture, you probably know what to do, just respectfully offering some possible suggestions.

When being a medic myself I often stick to similar rules, But If I have a friend online he will come with me, and act as a guard with the biggest meanest gun he can find, Also when engaging a group of people who need heals, make them come to you, one at a time. Or if strained or pressed you can always shoot im the chest with a dmr, this knocks them out but doesn't kill them, only had to do that once though after I got stalked by a fellow with a hatchet, so i guess I'll share that tale

I am playing alone one cold night when over Global chat the cry goes out for "MEDIC" I quickly offer the man my aid and he gives me the coordinates to a shed north of Cherno, (the one by the power station on top of the hill) says he got messed up by a zombie, I walk from Balota to his location, and when i get there, I see a man in a wookie suit laying on the ground with a hatchet. I go up to him and patch him, he says his thanks and I do my usual way of leaving which is pointing my gun at them and telling them to leave. (I know I sound like a dick, but I'm friendly about it! Its how i've stayed alive so long) The man runs into the forest, for what I thought was the last time. About 10 minutes later the sun has dipped into the ocean and the moon is raising over the shores and I hear, a man breathing heavily on Proximity Chat. I have NVG's and quickly spotted him crawling in the grass, "Sir, Stop now or I will kill you"

"I'll get you my boy! HEHEHE" and he slinks off (crawls backwards)

As I am running through the woods again I hear another set of footsteps behind me, and I turned around, dropped to a knee and shot him in the chest, patched him up, took his hatchet, dropped in the trees and told him stop. He then logged.
