Always Respawn and No Flares

Been playing 1.7.0 for a while now and apart from some bugs been greatly enjoying it.

However, since upgrading to 1.7.1 I have two quite major problems with the game:

1) Each Time I enter a game I'm back at the beach with basic kit regardless of how far I've gone inland or what equipment I've looted. Also I start with a pistol, so does that sound right for the patch?

2) Can't use flares. I've got them in my kit but can't select them with F to throw them.

The version I'm using is from the 1.7.1 torrent, so I basically extracted the @DayZ folder on top of the old one (twice, just to be sure).
