How do sound from shooting work?

I was playing dayz and a sniper was shooting... i knew what gun it was(dmr) but i did not know where the shooting was coming from, then eventually the sniper killed me. my friends can easily find where shoots are coming from and direct it on the compass?? while im still looking around the area. Can you tell me how the sound works or do i just need a sound system.

Check youre drivers are all installed and up to date. What you mean iPhone headset, you mean ear phones from an iPhone?

If yes, get a decent headset, maybe even a headset that uses 5.1 / 7.1 surround sound, rather than just 2 channel. :)
