Flickering Edges / Artifacts - HD 7870

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, ever since installing my new card I've been having some issues with textures. Small or thin textures seem to flicker, it really bugs my eyes and I find it extremely distracting.

CPU: i5-3570k

GPU: Sapphire 7870 OC Edition

Mobo: Asrock Extreme 4

RAM: Patriot Viper III 8GB @ 2133mhz

PSU: Cooler Master 650W 80+ Certified

I've also tried this card on a similar system with the same results:

CPU: Phenom 965 BE\

GPU: Same

Mobo MSI 770-C45

RAM: 4GB Patriot Viper II @ 1600mhz

PSU: Same

I've tried many different configs both in game and in CCC, I've tried drivers 12.8 through 12.11.

I did cheap out on my PSU - http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=33_441&item_id=028286

Here's a video so you can see what I'm talking about:

- notice the red & green house and surrounding area. (specific ingame settings are listed in description)

1) Is this normal?

2) Could it be faulty card/psu?

3) Any idea how to fix this?

Advice is appreciated -

I run the standard 2GB Sapphire version of the 7870 and don't see that issue.

650 Watts is plenty unless you're running a second GPU or video capture card.

What Catalyst Control Centre settings do you have in the Preset you run for DayZ?

Open CCC at click on Gaming > 3D Application Settings.

Here's what works best in terms of appearance and performance for me:

Anti-Aliasing : Use application settings

Anisotropic Filtering : Use application settings

Tessellation : AMD Optimised

Catalyst AI : Texture Filtering Quality = Quality. Surface Format Optimisation = Off

Wait for vert refresh : Off, unless application specifies

Anti-aliasing mode : Performance

DayZ settings:

Quality Preference : Very High

Interface Resolution : 1920 x 1080

3D Resolution : 1920 x 1080

Visibility : 2363

Texture Detail : High

Terrain Detail : High

Postprocess effects : Disabled

video memory : Default

Objects detail : high

Interface size : very small

Anisotropic filtering : normal

Shadow detail : High

Aspect ratio : 16:9 Widescreen

Anti-aliasing : Disabled

HDR quality : high

Vsync disabled

ATOC : Arma 2 trees and grass

PPAA : FXAA (Sharp filter) - High

According to MSI Afterburner in-game display, I get 30 - 50 FPS running through downtown Cherno and 75 + FPS in the woods..

I've used your exact settings - and I'm still having the same issue, only difference is that the trees flicker less and seem to have semi-transparent borders (with white pixel flickering). So you don't notice these issues at all? After watching some youtube videos of ppl with 7870s/7850s playing Arma 2 or Dayz I've seen this issue. What drivers are you currently using?

"and seem to have semi-transparent borders"

Woah woah, turn off alpha to coverage(ATOC ) and AA in game. Shadows and ultra high settings will stress a lot of pcs out too, leave them on high at most.

Turn off post process and put the game resolution up to 114% and keep interface on 100% and use the 'over render' technique* which gives anti aliasing effect.

Personally I think it's either a vsync issue (try and force on, or at least adaptive) or possibly an anisotropic issue (try 4x or 8x)

Visibility distance is in meters, 2000 being 2km, you can't see that far anyway. 1500 is more than enough.

* Patent Pending
