A problem running ARMA II.

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have created this post as i Do not know where else to turn to.

I have followed multiple suggestions from google, but nothing has worked.

When I run on steam a window flashes up, stating it is installing Directx. After this is done, steam shows i am playing arma II, having a green name, however no game window pops up, and then steam states that I am then not playing the game, it goes back to blue.

I have gone into the files of ARMA and tried to run the Directx install, and it states i always have an Internal error. I have tried running in safe mode to fix this problem and it never works. I have updated my Directx, but still have this error.

Without this problem being fixed, I cannot play ARMA.

When I go to the arma launcher within the files, it claims that a file named x3daudio1_6.dll is not designed to run on windows.

Can anyone help me with this problem? I really want to install and play this mod.

Does a little icon pop-up in your taskbar? If so you should try clicking on that it is probably your game launching then minimizing.

So you want me to just run that? I have done this step before.

Do i have to run it as admin?

Give it a shot.

This is a very generic error and you might end up having to search google. There are many possibilities as to why this is not working and you really haven't given us any information surrounding your case (i.e. your OS, amount of RAM, video card, etc.).

Generic Troubleshooting Tasks:

  • Is your graphics card so old that it can't process the GPU instructions introduced in DirectX 9?
  • Are you grabbing the right DirectX libraries for your architecture (x32/x64)?
  • Is your AV distribution blocking any parts of ARMA/DirectX from loading? (Turn off AV and try running ARMA)
  • Have you verified that the DLL file actually exists? (Could be a corrupt DirectX installation)
  • Are all the registry entries for DirectX correct? (Could be a corrupt DirectX installation)
  • Did you try completely uninstalling and re-installing DirectX?
  • Have you tried uninstalling/re-installing ARMA 2?
  • Do you have enough RAM to load ARMA 2?
  • Do you have enough VRAM to run ARMA 2?
  • Are all your drivers (video/sound/etc) up to date?
  • Have you completely updated Windows?
  • Is Steam completely up to date?
  • Are there any malicious process running on your system?

In case none of the above helps you (try uninstalling/re-installing DirectX before coming to this step, but don't uninstall/re-install ARMA until after this step): It sounds like ARMA is CTD'ing for some unknown reason. To really help you we are going to need:

  1. A comprehensive list of system specs
  2. The text contained within your c:\users\<username>\appdata\local\Arma 2 OA\armA2OA.rpt file. If it doesn't exist it may mean (again) that you have a corrupt ARMA installation. The environment variable to get to this directory quickly is %appdata% and if you are on Windows 7 you may have to go up one directory as it may automatically put you into the Roaming folder (you want to go into the local folder).
  3. An exact description of your problem.

Ok, I'll give you some inofmation about my system.

I5 2500K

gtx 660 ti

8gb of Ram.

120gb SSD, and a 1TB HDD.

A quick question I have, how do you unistall Directx? And by Installing directx again you mean from windows or the actual ARMA 2 file?

I cannot seem to find the armaA2OA.rpt file you was speaking about, there seems to be NOTHING in my local or roaming folders, no Arma 2 OA, no nothing.

The problem is I have no idea what to do, since whenever i Install the directX from the actual arma files there is always an Internal problem.

Starting the game from the launcher will result in it saying x3daudio1_6.dll is not designed to run on windows.

The basic problem is as followed - I have typed this same problem into google, and the problem that i have never seems to be solved, however similar ones are.

"Arma 2 failing to start after DirectX I just downloaded arma 2 combined operations from steam during the sale so i can play the Day Z mod. Unfortunately Arma 2 doesn't start after installing direct X. I click play in my Steam library and a box appears saying "performing first time setup... Installing: Microsoft DirectX for Windows (step 1 of 1) After this box eventually dissapears nothing happens. I have tried reinstalling it three times and reinstalling steam totally but the problem persists. I have ran as admin and tried to remove the directX file from the arma 2 folder in steam yet this only stops anything happening at all. Any assistance would be much appreciated."

Forgot you couldn't remove DirectX anymore (only attempt to reinstall it) so ignore that piece of advice.

What you want to run is dxdiag.exe and try and check to see if you have any problems. It's a self explanatory program and it should be included in your DirectX installation. Just use the search box on the start menu.

Unfortunately, seeing as how you didn't have an ARMA2 OA folder in the %appdata%\local folder I can only say that your ARMA installation is probably corrupt/didn't install correctly. If you haven't tried running ARMA by itself I would recommend doing that and if it still doesn't work then I'd recommend doing a complete uninstall and then subsequent re-install.

*Also, please note that when I say ARMA, I really mean Operation Arrowhead although you should still run regular old ArmA 2 at least once as well.

Here's a screenshot of my "%appdata%\local\ArmA 2 OA" folder and my "*.rpt".

That is quite helpful, to get those files in your %appdata%/local Files, do you have to run the game at least once? Or should they appear instantly from installation on steam?

They should be created on install.

Other things to try::

  • Have you changed the properties to allow C:\Program Files x86\Steam\steam.exe to run as an admin
(right click -> properties -> compatibility -> check "Run this program as an administrator" -> hit OK)?
  • Have you tried running the DirectX web setup (@ http://www.microsoft...ails.aspx?id=35) as admin (right click -> run as administrator) when you install it (I'm pretty sure you said you did)?

If none of these help you, I don't know what to say other than you need to re-install ARMA 2 OA.

To tell the truth, I'm helping you from the sidelines. I have the retail version of ARMA 2 OA (not the steam version) and I'm just running through common sense (previous experience with DirectX install issues/steam issues with other games) and the process of elimination. I don't work for BI and I don't know everything about their engine. If you need more detailed help or nothing here helps you (assuming you did try everything, including a re-install) you could always utilize google to your advantage or even contact BI support directly (I've never dealt with their support so I don't know if they'll be of any use or not).
