Best idea for balance in the beginning

Instead of spawning with no Makarov, or Spawning with less clips, this is the best idea that I have come up with.

I say that we should spawn with a Makarov that has no ammo.

What does this mean?

This means that there is less grief near the coastal areas where players don't care about their newly created character and go guns blazing everywhere.

This means that, like the no gun spawn, you have to sneak around in the beginning.

What does it change vs the no gun spawn?

Makarov mags are fairly easy to locate, where as guns are not.

This means that you can maybe find one or two mags to defend yourself if you make one mistake but two mistakes may cost your life.

It's still brutal in the beginning but lets you ramp up to being able to shoot much quicker.

In conclusion..

I think that this is the best alternative to no gun spawn.

However, I do not believe that a gun and ammo in the beginning is good either. There is simply too much kill on sight in the game. It's hard to keep players from doing that without destroying the feel of realism. I still like the idea of not being able to trust players that much but, kill on sight 100% of the time is fairly silly.

I agree with you to a degree. It's a happy medium you've thought of, but, honestly, I've had next to no issue finding weapons. Sneak past zombies into barn, and you usually find a weapon. It's all about picking your targets and the likelihood of it having a weapon. Also, use LOS it works fantastic.

I think you've got a good idea but you came up with it for the wrong reasons.

The reason to not have a useable weapon to begin with is not to coerce players into not shooting each other off the bat. The reason is to create desperation in the human being playing the game. Having a gun and no ammunition is one of those circumstances where you will be going through the 5 steps of grief over and over again until you either die or find ammo. That right now is created by starting with no equipment. It may very well change again.

The purpose of the game is to elicit genuine emotional responses, not to coerce people into playing any particular way.

With all that...spawning with a gun and no ammo would be reaaaallly annoying.

When you see someone with a gun your first instict is gonna be to kill him before he kills you, atleast for me. However, since people spawn with no weapon in the start, you really don't risk being killed as soon as you see someone, cause they might only have a flaslight. This will make it 10 times easier fiding "loyal" people and new friends in dayz =)

I agree with the emotional response. I think this game does that marvelously, but players not being able to cooperate does elicit emotions. It would be nice to have incentives to work together to achieve goals rather than the frag fest that it is right now.

I think the absolute best thing that this game can achieve is variety. You can play any way you want to. You can group up with people and survive or you can play it lone ranger. You could hunt other players in cities or camp outskirting towns. You can play as a loner in the woods living off of hunted meat or scavenging and looting.

I just think that right now for people who want to play as a friendly survivor don't really have that option because 99% of people you meet will shoot you on sight.

By your logic, though, every person who sees you on the beach is simply thinking 'The instant I find a gun I'm shooting this guy and taking what little he has'. I don't think it changes anything about the nature of the people playing or how they plan to play. The game will be just as nasty as soon as people get what they are looking for. In fact, if two people band together on the beach with nothing but flashlights, and they enter a barn where there is one gun, I am certain that they are both going to mad dash for that Winchester and try to nab it first. Then we'll see their true nature come out, both sides of the coin.

Even with no starting equipment I will choose to play solo. It changes absolutely nothing for me.

I think it is already easy enough to find weapons in the game. Just need to get to a city

Starting with no weapon will force a player to survive and force him to interact within towns and cities. When I first started playing, I was hesitant to go in towns cause I started with a pistol, ammo, food, and drink. There was no rush to search for what I had. But now when I respawn, I find the game more a challenge and more fun.

Now if they would only add melee weapons. Chain Saw! Run Zombie!

Agrre on this patch I do in someways! The no gun start is bloody brilliant and a flashlight love it! But the Zeds have to great of a vision as it stands now... They need to continiue to work on the Zeed behaviour make them a threat but not impossible for respawnd or new players!
