Deciding which server to play

I have started a character on a private server and one on a public US one. Both start with different gear.

Would gear from the public save and transfer to any other public? If I chose a separate private server, would my gear be erased?

Private hives (servers) are separate from the Public one, you can't transfer gear or equipment between the two.

If I join US 1234 server and build up some gear, but decide to start playing on US 2345, will my gear carry over?

If both of those are on the public server then yes (there is only one public hive/server), but if the servers are private (read, private servers mean each one is separate) then no.
