How do character saves work on the hives?

Recommended Posts

Hello folks, sorry if this is covered elsewhere, but I didn't turn up anything that seemed relevant on the search.

I started playing three days ago and have been bouncing from server to server to get a feel for things.

I am just wondering how character saves work, as far as I know I always join a private hive server, does that mean my character will not be saved to other servers? I am wary about joining a public hive because of the issues with hackers and script kiddies, but if I will constantly be resetting my character when I go from one private hive to another, that would get rather difficult. So can someone tell me exactly how the saves work here please? I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,

-Deg

Hi there Deg,

It basically works like this. Every server is to a "hive" meaning the area where character data is stored. When you connect to a particular server, it uses the character save from the particular hive it's connected to, while other saves on other hives remain untouched. A large number of servers are connected to the "public" or "official" hive, and you can move from those servers with the same character without too many problems.

The rest are on a "private" hive. Usually these private hives are only connected to one server, but there are some that are connected to a few servers. You can hop around these few servers with your same gear so long as they are on the save private hive. Usually these hives have a website that tells you which servers they host and how to connect to them if they have whitelisting and such.

It's certainly fine to not want to play on the public hive, so if you wish to maintain your gear simply keep track of which private hives you play on. DayZ Commander for instance has a favoriting system that lets you favorite servers so you can find them again, and even lets you put in notes to keep track of what's going on with that particular character.

Hope that helps
