Fortifications and Base Building

Recommended Posts

I know that building won't be out until the stand alone release most likely. But I just wanted to start a fresh post for peoples ideas for base building/ fortifications. More specifically what implementation would work best for this system. Like for example being able to freely place objects that you can make with the materials you have sort of like a Minecraft feel, just look and place the object. My other idea is maybe building an item like a tent that designates a zone or area around it for a free build RTS format placing objects like chain fences + gates down within a birds eye view grid of the zone created.(Realize that this type of building would require a great deal of resources like, nails, screws, tools, batteries for tools, lumber, barb wire, chain fencing, scrap metal) Squads or clans should be able to designate their base as a spawn point for their own members possibly? I also could see that breaking the game in some instances maybe having a spawn delay would balance it so people cannot defend their base forever by just instantly respawning inside walls/ buildings.

On another note for buildings that are already in the game boarding windows, locking and bracing doors, maybe put combination locks into the game so your group can access it and others can't unless equipped with bolt cutters or gun to breach the door. ([My point of view] In general having doors close and actually block zombies temporarily would be greatly appreciated not being able to loot with the clunky slow inventory screen because randomly spawned zombies pop out right next to the building I'm in is quit annoying at times specially when needing to heal, reload, or after I spend 30 minutes sneaking past zombies and survivors just to have a respawn erase that progress because their is no physical barrier).

I really don't care to read people saying this addition would be op or takes away from the game because lets face it, if this game is suppose to be realistic which it mainly is (besides zombies AI XD can't be helped really) people would in real life make fortified areas or at least take building they find and modify them. Examples of this in The Walking Dead, Governor's make shift walls versus the already made prison used by Rick's group. The Dead series mall, farm house, city fortress ...ect. 28 days later, and basically every other zombie or zombie like movie out their.

Some of these ideas may require the addition of hardware stores in game for some of the supplies speaking logically

I find that the biggest potentual problems with base building would be the UI and building mechanic and the collection of materials. Like how would materials be carried. A Half Life like carrying system seems to be the most logical way.

2 things:

#1. Please do use the search function, there are a lot of these threads saying mostly the same thing. Why, there are 2 topics on just the first page for this.

#2. Just as building a whole building from the ground up would take a long time, so would building any kind of fortification. What I think is a better idea is fortifying existing buildings and clearing certain (especially further out) areas. Lets say you took over a farmstead or small industrial sheds. You can fortify them with sandbags, camo, and sheet metal. The building is already there, so WHY build from the ground up? It makes no logical sense. Sure you can build something far in the hills, but its harder to get to and harder to build in general. The ability to fortify and expand on current buildings is a much better idea.
