Can't Use Flares after update

1.71 patch.

Joined game. Fucking dark. So dark. Dark dark dark. Even darker than before, unplayable dark. So I decided to use flares. Clicked F but wouldn't switch to flares. I don't know what's going on but I can't deploy flares, which means I can't see a centimeter in front of me. I can't play anymore at night.

You DO NOT spawn with flares any more. Check your backpack and you will have a torch in there.

I HAVE FLARES IN MY BACKPACK! What the fuck are they doing there if I can't use them?

Yeah, I took a few weeks off from playing, updated everything, and now I can't use my flares, or eat, or drink, or use anything else in my gear/inventory (other than my pistol.)

I guess I have to respawn to get the flashlight & the ability to use stuff again? Damn.

You can't use items directly from your backpack, you need to switch them to your 'main' inventory first.
