Enhanced Direct Communication, Radios and Scramblers.

Recommended Posts

Note: the only thing that MIGHT stop this from being awesome is third party VoIP software.

So it would be nice if we could shout and have the sound travel realistically, not simply drop off over a 40m radius. For example inside a warehouse sound would travel extremely well and possibly echo. Sound would not travel very well over the top of a hill yet it would very well within a valley. On this note it is very hard to move silently in the game, or at least quiet your footsteps for close proximity life-or-death stealth.

Radios might be ham radios, car radios, HF or LF portable radios. So we can browse the airwaves and intercept traffic or communicate long distances without side channel or third party software. The signal quality could add another dimension to the immersion, where going out of range or over a hill affects the quality of the sound. General changes in sound quality and the possibility of the enemy listening in might encourage use of the phonetic alphabet and comms discipline or disinformation tactics.

It would also be nice to be able to find/create scramblers which might kill radio traffic and maybe GPS within a certain range. Regarding GPS, can we think about that for a moment? Is it realistic that GPS still works in a post-apocalyptic game?

I think some of these ideas would be nice, especially ham radios.
