gunshot wounds

Recommended Posts

Did not see this suggested, which I find hard to believe and I apologize if it is and I just couldn't find it.

Simply put, I believe that when a player recieves a gunshot wound, there should be a probability, (calculate it however you want, by caliber/distance/chance whatever) that a bullet will remain in your body as opposed to the fortunate through and throughs we are very familiar with. It need not be complicated, but removing the bullet would require another players assistance and possible some medical tools. failure to remove the bullet would lead to eventual fatal blood loss or infection, to go nicely with rockets new love for pathology. I think that the need for player to player interaction here is realistic and immersive. i think it would be a great addition, anyone else?

on a side note! this i would assume is already being done for SA but a shot to the leg need not break it! if some kind of limping animation were added, also bleeding players leaving a blood trail for the attacker to pursue (and zombies? QQ)

i think it would be a great addition to the authenticity.

Or we could make it realistic where trying to remove the bullet gets you killed. That'd be much more interesting. I'd love to see howmany people die because they tried applying movie logic to Dayz.

Considering the unclean surroundings, I think surgery, to sterilize wounds and tidy them up, would probably be vital to your survival.

With no hospitals, no doctors and very little in the way of medical supplies, even if you don't bleed-out from the gunshot, the bacterial infection afterwards will likely cause your death.

Provided you can control the bleeding, it would be far more beneficial to remove the bullet + fibres of clothing before allowing the wound to heal.

@Sonic - I'm no doctor, but clearly, neither are you.

There's a reason when you get a puncture wound you're told to leave it in before a doctor can look at it. Sometimes the thing in your body is the only thing keeping you alive. If the bullet is pressed up against an artery, you're more likely to kill yourself by trying to remove the bullet and bursting the artery, which you have absolutely no way of patching up unless you're a trained doctor. They left bullets in people during the civil war, which was even filthier than the apocalypse, because it didn't even occur to people that filthy conditions were bad for your health.

Well, then even a single 9mm round will end up in killing me, if I can't even attempt to remove the bullet. Maybe make it so if you remove the bullet yourself, it will result in a bigger chance of getting an infection and more bleeding, but so you can still live trough it if you are healthy otherwise.

Bullets are not made of magical instant death the moment they enter your body. Just because you're shot doesn't mean you're dead. Cover the wound, pop some antibiotics, and you've got a good 70% chance of living through it.

The guy in the original post said it would require a teammate to remove bullets. That's what I was saying, not asking anyone to explain this to me. I know what it does in real life, but I'm looking at a game feature here.

So which antibiotics do you need? How many?

A hot bullet sterilizes itself, but the fragments of your clothes stuck in your body will slowly kill you.

Misuse of antibiotics causes bacteria to become resistant. The wrong antibiotics or an incorrect dosage will just make you die slower.

The real-world rules that allow you to laugh at "Hollywood heroes" don't apply when hospitals cease to exist.

Wounds NEED to be made sterile.

EDIT: Don't refer to "the civil war"

That's pretty damn ignorant.

I'd much rather see this than defecation and disease. Being able to be saved form an otherwise fatal wound through surgery from a pal gives players a GREAT reason to group up and cooperate.

to answer the points raised by sonic, i was just going for a simple mechanic, and not over-complicating it to the point where it becomes undesirable. to use your logic, the thought of picking up a random blood bag and having your buddy squish it into your body is laughably absurd as well.
