hence you needing the beta patch for arma 2 to even play 1.7.1

Yeah you can roll to and from those patches as far as I can tell, until the Arma patch is out of beta, then will probably require 1.7 patches on servers. I've seen a server run a 1.5 patch, but considered it a looting exploit if anything.
