Stuck on "receiving data...."

It seems that this issue has been going on for some time now. I did not used to have this issue when I first started playing with version 1.6. I used to be able to get a successful server connection within a matter of minutes. It usually takes significantly longer to find a server I can actually get into these days. (v1.7) What is the deal and what is being done about it....and is there anything I can do on my end to improve my chances of successfully connecting to a server?

I've also been equally getting stuck on the "Retrying to Authenticate" screen.
