Somebody help me! Low fps issues!

Recommended Posts

Hi fellow survivors,

I recently downloaded the game from steam, and love the game except for the fact that my computer nearly shits itself when I play it. I have an older computer, still able to run dayz tho, just at a slow speed. It is a toshiba, i don't have the specs for it right now as i am posting from a different computer, but when I play, I ususally get an average of 4-5 fps. I love the game, but I think it would be more enjoyable to play at a faster speed! I need advice on increasing my fps. I want to atleast get 10-15 fps out of my computer.

I have tried messing with the video settings but i don't really know what i am doing, and i am afraid to fuck with any files. if i have to i will, but preferably i don't want to chance at ruining the game all together.

Cheers, Jimmy

10 FPS? Really? Thats unplayable. I dunno if you think thats gunna be so much better than 5, but its not, its still going to be choppy as hell like it is now.

All you can do is turn everything to the lowest setting, but I assume you've already done that, if not then yeah do it. Go into options and turn everything to lowest. Its not hard to do.

Obviously we have no specs to go on, but I can pretty much tell you just from this, you're computer is just nowhere near good enough to play this game, sadly :( You can try all the settings and tricks in the world, but you aint gunna get this to be playable.

Go in to My Documents > ArmA 2 and open the ArmA2.cfg and ArmA2OA.cfg files. Locate the following command lines...

GPU_MaxFramesAhead

GPU_DetectedFramesAhead

And change the values to 1.

This should buy you a few more FPS, but it probably won't triple unfortunately, lol. Like Rooneye said it seems your system just isn't up to par, it might be time for an upgrade.

Haha yeah this is all for my brothers computer. My system runs at 10-20 inside cities, and 20-25 outside cities. I am perfectly happy with 10 fps, I don't really think it is too choppy. I am used to it. People complain about only being at 22 fps but i would kill for that most of the time. anyways, I will try doing ingame settings on my bro's computer, and see if i can get him up to 10 or 15 fps. I am sure he would be very happy with that.

Cheers, Jimmy

Also, what would you guys consider not laggy? I would consider 15 outside of cities not laggy, as long as you arenot doing anything too crazy like barrel rolls and shit in a helicopter.

15 FPS is laggy as hell, you can actually see the little 'skips' as your running, its choppy. Try this; fire your automatic gun on full auto while looking at the ground or sky, then aim forward and do the same. you will notice the gun fire rate is MUCH lower when not aiming at the ground, its so slow. So if you go toe to toe with someone with a decent PC, you're getting owned, as they can fire 10 bullets by the time you've fired 3, unless the other guy is shite ofc. Also aiming is MUCH harder at these low FPS's, yes you can do it, but i guarantee you'd be a BETTER player with a proper decent FPS.

I get 30-50 in major cities, locked to 60 everywhere else, lol. IMO anything under 30 is unplayable, the main reason being mouse lag. :(

Anything under 30fps is generally horrible to play with, 30-60fps is okay but can begin to get choppy in high traffic area, 60+ fps is where I like to have any game.

I'm not trying to sound elitist or anything but you will truly notice the difference with a decent fps - the difference between 30ish on my laptop and 60+ on my desktop is night and day, a low fps only negatively impacts you, especially coming up against players with better systems.

The key word there is 'pretty'. If you can shoot pretty well with that FPS, you'll be able to shoot much better and more importantly QUICKER, quicker to aim and also a faster fire rate.

Damn. Well I am serctainly not going to just stop playing Dayz, although my fps has to be atleast 20. i got 10-15 frrom the monkymonitor. I will just settle with ten, i am not a hardcore gamer so i don't think it is that bad

To be honest you should be able to tell the difference between 20 and 40, lol, but for me the main difference is how precise your mouse input is. That's impossible to convey in a video.

Because a video is only 24FPS. Watching a video is NOT the same. You WILL noticed a MASSIVE differnce if you played it. Unless you're 'special' or just dont want to admit it.

Ok. Anyways, how should i up my fps? I know for a fact that i can push it to 15 at least

Hmmm have you tried RAMDISK? I havent myself, but Ive seen others recommend it. Maybe try looking into that. Or one of those programs that stop background processes to free up your system resources so the game can have more. Never tried those either, but again seen other people mention them.

Rooneye I've heard so many people say RAMDISK and it just doesn't work...short of an upgrade there's not much you can do. The standalone may be a different story however, but from my expieriences in DAYZ nothing short of a good CPU/GPU combo seem to work for higher frame rates. I run an AMD 8150 @ 4.2Ghz and a gigabyte 6990 I get 60FPS constant (unless ping is over 180). I've tried various laptops and older CPU's and just seem to max at about 30-45 on the newest of those systems. I actually have 5 working computers, and 3 laptops at my disposal so yes I do alot of expierementing with RAID and RAMDISK and other things to test options to up my main gaming computer.

I hope that you find an answer but unfortunately if none of the previous suggestions work I doubt anything short of an upgrade will help.

http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma2:_Startup_Parameters

-maxMem=2047 ("if" you system has at least 3 gigs or ram)

Perhaps, -winxp (to force that Toshiba to render the game in directx9 instead)

http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma2:_Startup_Parameters#cpuCount (if you have dualcore cpu, maybe set -cpuCount=1 to ensure that your OS/system graphics and Arma 2 have their own CPU core to pester.)

Hope you fin your missing FPS' soon ;)
