After watching a load of videos where the player talks to nearby players without team speak/Skype etc, I was wondering how its done. I notice Frankie seems to have a steam logo visible whenever he speaks. Does steam have to be running? I'm sure I downloaded the steam version from the Bohemia website, but it launches just fine without steam. I have however added it to steam so I could launch it through that. Also, what button do you press, and is there any in-game mic setup required?

So far I haven't needed it, but I'm sure the day will come when I do, and I don't fancy standing around whilst I google it on the fly :D

On my keyboard it's defaulted with Caps lock, and ", " and "." to switch between channels. On an English setup keyboard that's the two buttons to the right of "M". Direct Channel is the vicinity chat and used to speak locally within a certain range.

Make sure you are in direct chat use the < & > keys to switch then press caps lock to speak or press / and then type something. Only people within I think its 40m? or something will be able to hear/see your text.

Some servers have Side Chat (Light blue text) that you are allowed to TYPE on and chat with everyone on the server. However you are NOT allowed to speak over side chat and if you keep doing it you will get banned (for good reason too).

TIP: For everyone who has been shouted at for talking over voice on Side Chat. Go into options and change the caps lock key to talk over DIRECT CHAT ONLY, that way you can be in side chat and type away and chat, but when you press caps, instead of talking over side chat it will immediately change over to direct chat while you hold down the caps lock and talk, and when you release the caps lock it will automatically put you back in side chat.

Ok, so it's caps lock on (Not held down?), and make sure it's set to direct chat. Then turn caps lock off when I'm done. Excellent. Cheers guys.

No no, you keep it pressed down while you talk then release the key. OR if you want you can DOUBLE TAP caps lock to turn it on constantly then double tap it again to stop.
