No Side Chat - need better communication options

I really like the game, still learning. However, the most frustrating thing especially for a new player is logging onto a server and seeing everyone else communicate in blue SIDE CHAT text and its not available for yourself.

People are always asking if you're friendly and of course you can't respond because the only options you have are Direct Communication, Vehicle Chat and Group Chat. Direct Com works if they are basically next to you. However no one waits that long and when you don't answer they assume you are a bandit and then kill you on site.

Better communication in the game should be available in some form so you can group up with people. Despite going 9 for 9 on deaths against everyone I run into I still try and play a friendly role when I can and its never paying off mostly because I can't let someone else know I'm friendly.

How do you access Side chat, anyway? I've died once because I couldn't communicate at all. Had me a crossbow too :(

anyway, yeah, how do you use Side chat?

Pretty sure side chat is completely being removed in the next patch.
