"Loading" Black Screen and more!

Hey all,

I'm new to DayZ and am having a few problems. I downloaded Arma 2 (the one with the main game and the expansion) through Steam. I started both games and then downloaded DayZ Commander and installed DayZ and all the additional mods. Here is where my troubles started. When I tried joining servers I kept getting a message "Bad version, server rejected connection". I looked up the message and found people saying to copy the arma2.exe and arma2server.exe from the beta folder to the main Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead folder. I copied and replace those files and was able to bypass that problem. Here is the new problem I can't seem to find a fix for:

When I enter a game I see a black screen that says something like "Creating Character". I can talk with other players while I wait. The screen continues to stay black and then says "Loading". Once the loading message pops up I can no longer see chat or anything, just a black screen. I have let it sit there for several minutes before I am forced to close it down with the task manager.

Anyone have a fix for this? I was very excited about the mod but this is a pain :(
