My friend lost all his gear for no reason

My friend logged into a random server kill some zombies on some server with like 2 other people in it because he was bored and then logged out a couple minutes later, in safety.

When he logged into a new server, all his items were gone and he had spawned as a new character.. I have no idea why this would happen, but we both are kind of upset cause it took some time to get the items he lost.

.45 acp x 3

coyote pack (the large one, not starter) x1

compass x1

gps x1

knife x1

hatchet x1

box of matches x1

binoculars x1

This was basically the only important stuff he lost, I dont know his playerid off hand, but I will edit it in soon when he logs on. My other friend tried to post about this but his topic didnt show up for some reason, so Im hoping this works.

Ill get more precise info on the whole thing once he gets back from work.
