Time Glitch 453 Posted June 15, 2012 I know that title is a bit compacted, but allow me to explain.I'm all for the removal of Global chat, because I think it ups the immersion factor and will promote more social interactions between players. That's great. However, I do wonder how this is going to affect the few player-run organizations that we have in DayZ, such as Dr. Wasteland's medical service, the DayZ radio station, and various trading caravans I've seen. My ultimate goal in DayZ is to help set up some kind of trading post/medical clinic. Basically, a safe haven for survivors. Let's say it's all set up and good to go...But how will anyone know? How do we spread the word? Forums are great and all, but that's OUTSIDE the game. How does the word spread in-game? Radios will obviously be coming later, but I imagine they won't be common. My only thoughts would be some kind of bulletin board in cities/towns or Player Journals that are left around. I don't really know where I'm going with this, but I'm just a little concerned about how the removal of Global chat might hinder the efforts of those who wish to rebuild society. Legacy (DayZ) 1091 Posted June 15, 2012 Because Direct Comm is so hard to use.I'm sorry but we really don't need to worry about Global chat when Direct Comm is a great solution for communicating now, especially when we don't have anyone running around in global chat saying useless things and letting them know of their location. However it would be nice for a single channel dedicated for simple help purposes for the server. Ex a 'help' channel to speak to the Admins.

Direct Chat might work better if you could chat within, say, a 200m radius rather than 50m. Still, spreading the word about a trading outpost/caravan would be quite difficult, not to mention trying to get in contact with them later.
Timma (DayZ) 16 Posted June 15, 2012 I think for a final, polished product removal of global/side chat is a great idea. However, with the game in it's current state it is extremely useful to be able to ask questions, get advice, etc. I think there is a case to be made that the variable nature of an alpha state, and the benefit of being able to communicate during it, outweighs the immersion quality of disabling global chat. This is particularly true for new players - I have been a hardcore gamer for all my life, but even after reading a post in the forums I still needed some help on how the inventory system worked. combatcomm1 234 Posted June 15, 2012 Direct chat is working great for most and no i have seen a crazy increase in friendly encounters since. People are relieved to see people now

Brenelael 1 Posted June 16, 2012 If you built it they will come. Just like in real life word of mouth will be all the advertisement you will need. When the survivors that you help go back out into the world they will tell others who will seek you out.
spidey 7 Posted June 16, 2012 A PM-System would be great. So you can talk to other groups or players. But i think it should be an item ingame what you need to find (like a radio?). Then you can select it via mousewheel menu.

Time Glitch 453 Posted June 16, 2012 For my group we have tested Direct Communication multiple times and it never works.... So enable side chat until you are certain it will work at least...Maybe they're going to update it with 1.7.1 because I play on a Beta server, where everything is supposed to be fixed and wonderful, and Direct Chat still doesn't work. *le sigh*
Blown4Six 48 Posted June 16, 2012 I dont really know how removing the side chat is going to promote more people talking together? Just today, I installed the beta, and of course I couldn't use the side chat. Well I'm running along the coast to cherno and 2 people spot me and ask if i'm friendly in the side chat. Well, I cant very well respond at all so I sit there and I salute them and they clearly see me. So I continue up the coast and one of them runs up behind me as I take off running and kills me.. Sure they were dicks, but not being able to communicate definitely didn't help the situation...
Kophka 109 Posted June 16, 2012 Pro : The direct chat only option really helps immersion, it makes the game just that much more lonely and scary.Con : Had to blast a guy yesterday, and again today. Distance was about 110m on the first one, and about 80m on the second. I tried reaching them on direct chat, both voice and text. Neither one responded after 3 attempts of each type, and I didn't want to risk being a bit part in some Hero's story (the part where he got great gear from some idiot). So I wasted them. Got some great gear too.

Gmanz (DayZ) 13 Posted June 16, 2012 I see little benefit at all to global chat in DZ. Half the time it is impossible to know who people are actually talking to (as in someone asks "you friendly?"...well, who the hell are they talking to? Where are they? Are they talking to me, or on the other side of the map?).The other half of the time...well, honestly anyone who goes on global chat and starts advertising their position is practically begging for the death which usually finds them not long afterwards. BL1P 252 Posted June 16, 2012 Direct works fine for me and my group of m8s.What the game needs is radios in loot. And the radios need to be like acre mod radios whereby you can select or create your own frequencies. All radios could use the group channel I guess thats why its been left in.The radios should not have total map coverage either there should be a range and objects and terrain should effect the range.Side chat etc was a total game breaker for me and should not be in a game mod like this IMHO.
