Tracking and Scouting.

Hi all,

I'm set to start playing tonight, but from what i have observed by watching videos a key element is missing in my belief that is tracking.

The ability to know what to look for on the ground, disturbed grass, blood trails, footprints. This could be a dynamic and awesome new feature to an already amazing game.

Imagine stalking a rival group of survivors, by foot prints, shells, blood, broken/disturbed environment. It would be even cooler to lay false tracks, set up ambushes with these features.

Anyway, obviously there would have to be timers on how long these things lasted/visibility.

Just an idea, any thoughts are welcome - constructive criticism is good!

I don't know whether this is possible or not, but if it is, please do add this devs!

This would add so much to the game!

Walking through a city and spotting some footprints, checking to see if they're fresh, getting scared when you see they are.

Being around a village and see a small path carved through the grass, then shells on the ground and blood, a trail, leading to a dead survivor giving you a idea of what happened to the poor fellow.

+1 for this idea!

Vehicles leave tracks, shouldnt soldiers do it aswell?

In full support of this ofcourse, another nice twist.

I was under the impression that you could already see people's footprints, though only on the higher (highest?) settings.

Still, would be neat if it was expanded upon a little bit, and if it was made available to everybody regardless of the settings they're using.

You can. And vehicle tracks as someone else said. They don't last forever though so really the best way to track is to either never let them out of your sight or when you do, be able to predict where they are going and where you will find them again.

That's the quickest way to get people to vote your rep down.

It sounds a little too fancy for the current engine but I defiantly like the idea. My kind of tracking usually happens aiming down the barrel of my gun, haven't really had any other reason to track players.

The only way I would like to see this implemented would make the game be a lot more RPG'y and levelly. Mount and Blade has a skill where when you level it up you can see more details on the size and type of prints you can see on the ground, and it works quite well like that.

But if everybody just had this ability from the start, I think it would do more harm than good, tbh. i am torn, I like the idea but I really don't know if I want it to be implemented without a hell of a lot of thought going in to how it should be handled.

I like the idea. And why not have it from the start. Its a matter of balance, how visible things will be and you have to train yourself to read the trails or even just detect em. Dont like the idea to "skill" this. I think everyone should have equal conditions no matter how long they play, it should just depend on your skill. And if ArmA give this option from vanilla its even more awesome, now I just haev to check if my computer can run ArmA on high settings.

I don't like the idea of not being able to cover your tracks if you don't want to be followed, like leaving an inevitable track that there is nothing you can do about. I personally always dispose/hide any bodies of the zeds I dispatch, I don't want anyone 1. on edge due to the fact that there are corpses around and suspect there to be a hostile player around (which I am not, but understandable if they assume so), and 2. looking for me by following a trail of bodies that i carelessly left behind. Foot steps are left by Players already, audible footsteps, and pressed grass when laid down as well. If there was some way to consciously cover our own tracks, then that'd be neat.

Cant think of that as a big problem, but in fact im playing only at night I cant tell that much about the risks you have at daytime. But cant you just search for a street you walk a few meters on cuz you dont leave trails on em? To bad there are no rivers in this map cuz they can be used to cover your trail.

I try to only play at night as well, I feel safer during then. The street thing.. I try to stay off all streets due to the fact that they're generally in the open to undead and player alike. I stick to the woods if I have an option.

So I do. I wonder if trails are taht easy to find in the woods, specialy during nighttime. But I will check it out his weekend when i have the time to play :D
