Dogs picking up and tracking survivor/bandit scent?

Recommended Posts

I've looked everywhere for info on dogs in DayZ and i have a suggestion that i dont think anybody has thought of???

Personaly im sick and tired of bandits and i would like to get some payback!

If your dogs could pickup the scent of a survivor/bandit and give you the name of that person, you would have the ability to find them or there camp/underground base of ops. I think the scent trail should last til a server restart, or 4-6 hrs maybe? It would add a fantastic new element to the game..... hunting the hunters!

On the flip side, if your a survivor/bandit and your being tracked there should be ways of masking your scent like running through rivers, lakes and ponds/changing clothes/sitting near a fire or some kind of ointment? you could leave a scent trail trap and leed the dogs into some well placed bear traps.

The dog really needs to be able to do more than just carry stuff and find animals, in my opinion, it should be feared!

If its not planned for the standalone then it will be added at a later date? I cant see Dean “Rocket” Hall missing an element like that?

What do you think? Yes or No?

If your dogs could pickup the scent of a survivor/bandit and give you the name of that person,

dog - "woof woof... his name is Walden... woof woof"

do u see the flaw in that?

I like the idea. I could see it being troublesome to those being tracked, but cool none the less!

Agreed, but it doesn't have to give a name though. Knowing you are tracking someone is fun enough! :)

i believe that dogs are being introduced and can track animals already, so adding this feature would be relatively straight forward, obviously the dogs shouldn't be able to reveal names of players and maybe to track a particular player you need to find an exact spot he was at in say the last 10 minutes or something.

Good point. Maybe insted of players names the dog could id how old the scent is so you can tell if you was heading to or from the player?

The Royal Titanic Express you idiot ..grab a lifejacket :)

I like the scent idea, obviously picking up a name is silly but the scent deal is cool. Say you have been hit in a shootout or whatever and have to start running because you hear dogs coming..imagine the panic ! You need to bandage but have not the time or the dogs will be on you , needing to find a way to drop them like climbing a vertical area, running through water etc. Risking staying still so you can pop them..and letting the owners gain distance on you. Even if not wounded it would still instill some fear as you know not far behind the dogs tracking you are the guys with guns.

What if tracking dogs couldn't do much damage to the player, but once reaching them could bite their leg/tear at clothes reducing movement speed, letting the owner get a shot? Also once you are being attacked by a dog, aiming will have the pain effect making it harder to shoot the dog off of you?

As a flip side, maybe once the dogs become close to the player they're tracking the dog will begin barking, letting you know you're close but also warning the person being tracked that they're almost caught? That way once you hear dogs barking, you'll get that sense of fear that you're about to get screwed, kind of like when you hear zombie growls out of nowhere.
