fix the ghostly, broken ambient sounds

Recommended Posts

There's a bunch of ambient sounds in dayZ that are clearly just randomly played sounds, not actually caused by anything happening in-game. No, I'm not talking about the music, I mean some of the actual ambient sounds. There's one that sounds like a metal gate or door opening that gets played randomly in towns or cities a lot for example, and the first few times I heard it when I was new, I thought I'd actually heard a player

A lot of the sounds are pretty quiet and I wouldn't be surprised if most people haven't even noticed, but playing on a decent audio set up with studio monitors there's a lot of distracting, random ambient sounds of things that aren't actually happening.

sure you start to filter them out over time, but they're still unnecessary

Zeds that are 50 yards away but sound like they're moaning in your ear are annoying too.

Against removing the random sound bits. That metal gate sound still freaks me out sometimes. This is why it needs to stay in the game.

When your in the woods and you hear random shuffles that makes you think someone is crawling after you. Or the random sound of someone saying uhghgh it hurts when your next to zombies lol. I climbed up in a tree stand and hear someone eating beans and drinking but nobody was around. Makes me paranoid, I like it.

There's a difference between vague sounds that add to the feel of the game, and very distinct sounds that simply shouldn't be there

especially as sound is done pretty well in this game, and listening out for other players is essential, it doesn't make sense that there are sounds like a gate opening being played when it didn't actually happen.

Make a good soundscape and you can keep your 'paranoia', without having to confuse players

A metal gate sound when there is no metal gate near is rediculous.

There should be NO random sounds. All sounds should be generated by somehting real or they should not exist.

Yes and no.

i personally enjoy the way sounds creep me up when i crawl through a town or run through the woods.

BUT, for the sake of realism, when you hear a sound, there has to be a source. and right now, most of the time i don't even care anymore because i know its just a random sound being played.

so it could be done like this:

when a zombie/player/animal walk into a fence or a gate, or if a rabbit is dashing through the underbrushes right behind you, the according sounds are played. immersion & authenticity!

on the other hand, sound in this game is generelly borked in a bad way.

your own sound, sounds by zombies, gunshots are generelly way to loud, and sounds don't fade over distance. volume is just stepwise adjusted to your range from the object.

i hope this is one of the things being addressed in arma 3 <3
