Trouble Loading Character

I just recently installed DayZ with Arma 2 free and operation arrowhead, I started loading everything up and i went on a server played for a little bit then i left the server. When i came back to a different server i had to start up a new character. After a couple more servers in which i had to create new characters i started joining other servers that loaded to random characters i created.

Any help whatsoever will be useful to me

There are 2 main types of DayZ servers - main hive and private hive. Main hive servers are the 'official' servers, you progress will be carried across all of these servers only tents and vehicles are server specific. Private hive servers are 'unofficial' servers, your progress will only be saved on the individual server. These allow admin to edit the mission file and customise the rules a bit more.

Sounds like you've been playing on private hive servers without realising it.

Also if you are using Dayz Commander you will be able to see what servers that are connected to the DayZ hive and those who are not. There is also a filter option that is called Hide Unofficial

You see the thing about DayZ commander is that i was able to install dayZ with it but I'm not able to see any servers. Could it be because it didnt sense my arma 2? (I used arma 2 free and operation arrowhead) If so is there another way i can tell which servers are private and which are official?
