I am having the exact same problem as well. I got the bizarre prompt to "optimize game files" and clicked yes, which seemed to break Arma2 CO completely.

I 'm having the same problem too. Went to play ArmA2: CO to try out "Wasteland" and the game conversion notification came up and went with it, and now I can't launch the game because of the "Game is unavailable(application is running)" error. What does it mean by, "application is running" though?

Yeah, I skimmed pretty much the entire thread and didn't notice your solution. It worked.
