Anyone who has been killed via HACK...im all wtf's?!?(rant)
Xelous replied to Viaticus's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Indeed, epipens instantly cure shock, but you can only apply them to other people, not yourself - least I can't seem to jab myself - maybe I'm too special to get the aim right? So, failing an epipen and a buddy, when you go into shock, retreat to the tree's, sit still, calm down let your breathing return to normal, food and drink, it will steady your nerves. Shock is indicated by this white icon directly. Pain is indicated less obviously, to spot being in pain (which only happens after being struck by a zombie) you need be in first person view, if the view is juddering (or just your weapon juddering) you are in pain - and indeed, as sostronk makes clear, painkillers are the correct way to remove the effect of pain. You can not easily spot being in pain from the third person perspective. And Viaticus you don't mention shaking so it does not sound like you were in pain. As I understand it though, if you are in shock, and stay in shock, and push your character to keep going (this is indicated with the very ragged breathing you can hear) your character can randomly have a cardiac arrest and die. So curing shock is important, keep warm, keep dry, eat food, drink, check for pain and calm down to remove shock effects. Hope this helps :) -

When you are very low on blood you can randomly pass out, this means your character will fall over and an egg timer style icon will start to count down in the middle of the screen. Sometimes the countdown can be fast, sometimes very slow. That was most likely the indicator for your guy being in shock, food and drink would help cure that. If you log out of the server whilst in shock like this, when you log back in you have a chance to pass out (though sometimes - and I've had this happen - you can log back in and just be regular in control but still in shock). The deafness is part of low blood, you can't hear when your blood pressure is very low, your vision is also impaired. But I must say, nothing you describe sounds "hacker" related at all, it sounds like you were very low on blood, passing out, in shock and finally something made you die... It may very well have been a sniper shot, but nothing you say seems to make for a hacker related story my friend, sorry. -
Why do I keep doing this to myself... Hey folks, some of you may remember my earlier story, where I got my character's legs broke and had an epic save of finding morphine in a deer stand, hence avoiding the wrath of my co-pilot wife, whom also plays the same one character... Well... I gave up sneaking on a few minutes behind her back for a good fortnight... However, today, just now in fact I popped onto play a server DE828 in fact, I purposefully chose an empty server (as I'm at work and wanted to just pass some time whilst waiting on a very long process I was carrying out to complete) and move the character from a near Grishino to the deep dark woodlands east of Petrovka. A simple task of following the woodland, avoiding Devil's Castle and keeping an eye if anyone is in the server... I did it, easily... I reached the woods, just by the 200 elevation marker East-Nor-East of Petrovka in fact, when suddenly I was teleported out to debug plains, denuded of all my gear by a laughing cracker who proceeded to demand I "lay down to get t-bagged". I have logged off... My problem now... How do I tell the wife?... I don't have time to play properly here at work, restarting the character getting all the same, or enough of the same to pass him off as the same character, to her... and tonight was to be our last night playing this week as we're so busy over the weekend... All in all, I'm screwed... Its all my own fault, playing behind her back, I'll give the crack smoking 12 year old cracker a partial on this one too... Shit on me.

What percentage of high-end items do you think are hacked-in, on a typical server?

Quick Idea to reduce death by server hoppers
Xelous replied to amishterminator's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I gotta go with CerebralZombie on this one, it'd open up a huge can of worms along the lines of calling people a hacker, just for logging in... It'd also open up an avenue of abuse/griefing... But that said, and I'm not sure about this one, so maybe someone could confirm/deny this... If you have a map and compass, and you can actually see the person you can see them on the map... I've seen zombies on the map appearing... even in woodland I've seen the yellow marker moving for "man" (which was a Z)... So, perhaps we can all see one another if we open our maps... A direct indication of "someone has logged on" is a bit too much, IMO. -
What should our next competition be?
Xelous replied to mattlightfoot's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
The next competition should be: "Guess how long until apache25 comes up with a stupid suggestion someone else already suggested"... Its a little like cow-pat Bingo, but less interesting. -
"tip 20: like so many people have suggested before add cannabalism if anyone has seen the road they will know what im talking about." I'll lay this one out now bro, other people have suggested it, its got its own thread, you even point out other people have suggested it... so don't come back and edit your post to suggest it again. "idea 21: get rid of tin cans they are usless and nobody uses them. " They do have uses.... Two of them I can come up with... One very good use and one very funny... Until you can work them out, I have a suggestion... Idea 22.... apache25 must stop coming up with ideas.

I personally need to hear a reason for them to be there... Why are they venturing away from towns...?.. Their natural food is the flesh of the un-infected, they ignore animals, they ignore and shun tree's as they're for the most part quite stiff and clumsy... Why would they venture out into the wilds? Sometimes one can be surprised by a few zombies who are at a little shack in the woods, or a deer stand you were unaware of, and its thrilling to be suddenly on the run, or fighting for your life... So I see the appeal of zombies roaming... Just I simply can't seem to find a reason to explain them being there. There is a post up else where questioning whether they're going to include some of the ideas from the "Armaversum" into DayZ, this means some of the mission ideas I believe... so possibly giving a reason for Z's to be out in the wild, just like they appear around helicopter crash sites... But Rocket himself has replied that he wants to stay away from this idea, not to give any tangible story behind the Z's, or the infection and to keep the game more about the player, about the survivor experience. So, to keep it more about the survivor their has to be somewhere to survive, and at present this is the wilds. Making conduits for travel and forcing survivors to tread with care around towns and only venture into them for the items they need to survive, hence driving the game. Without a story, without that reason for the Z's to be out there I don't think it could be justified to have them mooching about...

Hey, an interesting post, lost of ideas... I'm sure many will be raked over and many are repeats of other ideas already posted... But for what its worth, here are my 19 two cent pieces on the items you raise.... "idea 1: make zombies fast indoors but let players have a certain amount of time before the zombies break through the door. (if the door is closed)" I really don't like this, making them slow is currently one of the few early/poor gear game ways to shake chasing packs of zombies, and seeing them slow is normal, they roam outside, they are clumsy and their eyes are poor, so seeing them slow down seems more natural and to my mind seems to aid the game and realism... Plus being cornered with no way out, scratching your nails down the wall paper as three slowly corner you is so much better, thrilling, than just being run down by them. Plus game-mechanic wise, it seems to me rushing zombies break your legs (least this is my impression) so if they rush into a house and break your legs all the time, its going to get very tiresome. "idea 2: let players push furniture against windows and doors to help prevent zombies getting in." In the current ArmaII engine this is a real no-go area, with barbed wire and rocks breaking legs, not to mention small walls and steps making your stand up at random, putting more stuff in the way is going to be bad. Plus the physics of calculating it all is pretty intense. And this is not to even mention how we all already hate barbedwire hedges being put up blocking doorways, with people able to move furniture it'd just become a griefing arena, a tiresome nightmare. "idea 3: a block button should be added so suppose im about to be slashed by a zombie i can press F to block the zombies attack." Fine, but... this means we'll all have broken arms as well as legs... Zombies hit hard, very hard, they don't care about damaging their own bodies, blocking though an option is going to be pretty grizzly for the receiver of the hit.... "idea 4: add the ability to kill zombies from behind." You can kill zombies from behind... Just a hatchet, a pistol, a rifle, a sub machine gun or an assault rifle... works like a charm... But, if you mean something like choking them... some of them don't seem to breath that much anyway, they gurgle and flop their heads around, so there's plenty of broken necks, plenty of low pulmonary users out there with very grey complexions, who are super strong and would simply turn around in your feeble Vulcan Nerve Pinch and slap you silly... "idea 5: hunting knives should also be a used for killing people and zombies." I agree with this one... "idea 6: if the player has a knife let him be able to stab or stealth kill players if he is close enough (everyone can do that)." Okay, this is a repeat of number 5.... And as for stealth... Press left shift while you walk, crouch or crawl.... Or play at night, you'll soon realise, you already can "stealth" about... "idea 7: shovels pipes and kitchen knives should be added as weapons." I like the idea of a shovel, and personally think you should have to have a shovel (or entrenching tool) to hide bodies - because I'm tired of snipers sitting above Elecktro shooting the innocent and then hiding the bodies of the zombies they attract. As for pipes... erm... Why?.... And... what is it with your fascination with knives, this is the third mention of them already... Get into spoons man, they're safer. "idea 8: houses should be more detailed such as sinks and cupboards in the kitchen forcing players to scrounge through the shelves and the cupboards to find bullets and food." Fair enough idea, we all like graphical detail, but as we all already know, and as I've already mentioned in this post, the current ArmaII engine is rather poor at getting us stuck on stuff, to the more bric-a-brac we have lying around the more we're going to get stuck... Detail is fine, but sticking and breaking legs on junk is bad. That said though, remember the zombie apocalypse has come about... The place is going to be messed up, and as such I think the map/details such as this are just fine. I will however say some of the door ways are terribly thin... "idea 9: more realistic weapon damage on zeds example 2 shots from makarov to zombie=dead after all they arnt those shitty shitty head shot requiring romero zombies." Lets parse this one again... Realistic... damage... Zombies.... Whats real... I think the balance is right in most cases, there are other threads around commenting on specific weapons, but you shoot a zombie in a head with anything and it falls down, you shoot it in the butt and it'll kick yours back a foot for your trouble... and that's part of the game, and an effective one... I like the one shot to head thing... And the zombies in DayZ ain't Romero zombies, the latter are dead, whilst Rocket has stated the Z's in Cherno are alive just infected... "idea 10: container ships stranded off the coast should be added with a small zombie crew but food and medical supplies on board." Don't like this, there's only one square of water tile out there (map-wise), they'll become havens for people to grief and snipe the shore and cause all sorts of imbalance on the shore line, which is already am important start point... so you're simply suggesting to add something to enable more advanced players to grief the inexperienced/new players putting them off... which is a poor game mechanic... and pretty bad business for the user base as it'd put people off. "idea 11: naval ships off the coast or at naval docks with medium grade military loot and MRE'S." Ner, see Point 10... Are ships the next knives, are you going to mention them like fifteen times? "idea 12: i know this has been suggested before but roaming packs of zombies should be added." A fair point, one made in other posts to more effect and with reasons to back it up... This isn't a suggestion which bothers me personally, but I'd like a pack of Zombies to have a reason to be wondering the woods... Perhaps we can dress them like the guys in Deliverance? "idea 13: (already suggested by me 3 weeks ago) add gas stoves for cooking tinned food to increase the amount of blood you get from the food. (stove requires gas to operate)" Where are you going to get gas supplies, the electricity if off... Natural Gas network and water network also, one assumes... I could see maybe a camping stove to be added would be nice, and perhaps more convenient (taking one bag slot - as opposed to piles of wood taking two), but I don't think these messed up post apocalyptic towns should have working stoves. But, I would see finding a big open range (an Aga) and bringing in piles of wood could be interesting... heating a room/building up... stopping infection... and letting you cook... As for adding more nutrition to the food... Tinned food is already processed, whatever its got in it, its got in it, raw or cooked... Raw meat we already can cook in the game and as per the real thing its more palatable and one gains more nutrition from it... So this suggestion is somewhat muted. "idea 14: zombies should wander into apartments and houses at night to sleep (on the floor) walking into the zombies resting places can wake them up." Zombies don't seem to sleep... They're infected and always on the look out for lunch, burning up their body reserves, which is why they're in such a state... least this is how I come to understand them just by watching their behaviour... having them go to bed is going to look like the end sequence from 'Shaun of the Dead'... Having them collecting trolleys or competing on 'Its a Knock Out'. "idea 15: add pharmacies and clinics which may have antibiotics or bandages." True more places for medical supplies would be good, but this is post apocalypse... they might very well have been raided and empty already... Plus the idea of the game is to spur you into needing to go to different places to survive, so finding antibiotics (etc) should not be trivialised. "idea 16: make cars alot more common but fuel alot rarer this would encourage a thing i call the fuel wars." Interesting idea, but perhaps the people have fled in their cars... spreading this infection... plus its been a few years since infection took hold, the world is battered and bruised... The current low amount of vehicles just seems to fit to me, it seems right. "idea 17: cars should only need repairing if you crash or shoot them because why would every car need repairing?." The world has come to a stop, the infection has ravaged the place, what few vehicles remain have been left in all weathers for seasons on end, they're rusty, battered, abused vehicles... That's why every car needs repairing... Mel Gibson taught us this as the Mad Max series progressed. "idea 18: gunshots should not attract zombies as it is unfair the way the zombies keep respawning and you run out of ammo so i like to sneak." Erm... Justify this one... Why is if unfair... You make a shed load of noise and everyone just stumbles on... and they keep respawning because this is trying to make you move on, you can't kill them all and then just saunter around, that's not a game, its not a challenge... And if you like to sneak then go sneak, don't shoot... And then remember this, different guns already have different sound levels, go find a pistol (I suggest a G17) and pop a few in the head, don't fire an enfield in a town, but you fire a pistol you'll bring very few Z's your way. "idea 19: let players fire assault rifles and pistols while running for reduced accuracy." Erm... when you are running you sway your arms, big big swings... holding weapons is all you can do with them... If you want to move and shoot... Hold left shift down as you move... I mentioned left shift before... I don't think you've grasped how to use it... Go play at night, crouch, hold left shift, walk around quietly and use a pistol to head shot zombies... you may suddenly find your game improving a lot. Thanks.... Now... Please seek help... Knife Knife Knife... Ship Ship... Car Car Car... Its a bit repetitive, and in case of the knife fixation a little worrying.

Good Afternoon All, I got a suggestion, during an encounter with a group of bandits last night I was pinned down in woodland, unable to ascertain the direction from which the fire was incoming. The situation arose through my hearing rounds incoming (striking the ground and tree's around me) so I took cover. But, once in cover (a bush) the foliage was alive with incoming rounds, clearly the engine (client) and the server support triggering of a sound with rounds hitting foliage, however, none of this let me get a bead on where the fire was incoming from. Their position was beyond range of hearing, I saw no muzzle flashes and I was right inside the bush so unable to see out. My suggestion therefore is that as well as the trigger/effect for the sound to play, that there be a secondary effect of leaves being knocked off of the bushes, these could be in the wake of the rounds giving a general indication of the direction from which the fire is coming.... Everyone take a deep breath, for here is my MS Paint effort at a diagram: I understand this maybe too calculation complex a task, especially with high rates of fire/MG fire, so perhaps only 1 in 3, or 1 in 5, such shots should have the effect to save the servers melting down or the effect being exploited to lag an opponents client/connection. But certainly the first shot should be furnished with this effect, if it is at all possible, to help with getting a bead on the target. I'd suggest the following rules/parameters for the effect: 1. Out going shots are only calculated for this effect after a flight time equivalent to 50 meters to avoid lagging close fire fights to avoid a sniper throwing out a spew of leaves before themselves to avoid shots in towns being overly affected by this calculation 2. Tree's need not cause this effect, (trunks already show bullet strikes). 3. First round needs to always make this effect: A cool-down might be in order, to prevent use of Enfield/Winchester (et al) causing a lag, where someone fires, causing the calculations for this effect, waits and fires again, effectively using the effect to lag an opponent. 4. Not every round needs to make this effect: MG/rapid fire might be used to spam/lag an opponent, to avoid this the effect being exploited, I suggest it be applied only to certain shots, either each round after a known/defined cool-down or for a round in sequence order (e.g. every third round - like a tracer). 5. This effect only needs to be visible/transmitted to a client/player by the server within a set range Suggest 15 meters tops, beyond that no effect no benefit, so shooters can't be easily flushed out with this effect by groups. There's my suggestion for the day... I just want to be clear.... I DO NOT want to Add tracer lines etc I DO NOT want to Add indicators at the site of a shooter I DO NOT want to Add fairy magic dust to tell me where shots are coming from I just want to add an effect, a touch of realism, local to the receiving end of a shot.

You can see on the ground, work it out from walls, and figure it out from some tree trunks... But you can't if you are just in foliage and shots are raking through the bush branches at body level... If you wish, you can sit in a bush and we'll play "hide and go bandage yourself" :D Bullets in the ArmaII engine itself do make smoke puffs on leaves (https://dev-heaven.net/issues/7173) but I didn't see any puffs on my bush in this instance, nor could I generate any last night checking this out (tried Revolver, G17, M4A1, Enfield and MP5), so I guess the DayZ team have fixed that problem. So I leave this as it stands, bullets pass through foliage, making no visual indication, but they do make a sound so there is a trigger/event related to bullets hitting foliage, I'd just like to see a visual effect, cause and effect... you shoot a leaf IRL you'll splatter that chlorophyll all over the place. As for all those folks commenting about the distance you can hear a rifle from, from personal experience I can tell you a KAR98 can be heard from over 900 meters easily to distinguish the direction it came from, more modern assault rifles (and I've heard an AK47 and an M16 being fired) are a little quieter, but from 650-700 meters its easy to pick out the direction, depending on how flat the terrain is etc... (and I heard them on a firing range, which is very flat and has walled sides and face so I'm not the best informed on that topic)... But in game, I have a sneaky idea that in the position I explained I was in, the shooter was far away, I think they were in a town over 1.5KM to my north east and shooting wildly into the bushes with an enfield or winchester... that's my gut feeling (if they can remember doing this to me please tell us the details your end)... and they shot so wildly as they had no scope... I however had a scoped weapon (just a CZ550) in my bag but was so unsure of the direction from which their fire was coming, I stayed with my assault rifle for the fire-power and crawled my ass out of there (behind a small wall - which made me stand up again - gah). I have no beef with how far they were and whether I could hear the shooter, but being in that situation, and I don't know if I'm asking too much, but with so many sounds playing of the bullets striking the foliage around me, it would have been great to see a flutter of leaves coming out of one quarter of the bush just to give me an idea of the direction. Not a bead straight back to them... Not a slow mo camera, nothing fancy, just a flutter of a few quads with leaf textures. As for all the MSPaint fans out there.... :beans: :)

[HOW TO] The ultimate solution for the infinite Loading Screen
Xelous replied to yoan.boivin@hotmail.com's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
May I ask.... Why specifically open a whole other copy and join a server you know works... before closing the one which is stuck... surely its more efficient to close the duff copy to the wonky server and they just set about a whole other copy of the game? Don't get me wrong, I got behemoth machines able to run multiple upon multiple copies, but not everyone does  -
BATTLEYE CLIENT: INITIALIZED 1.170 (KEEP GETTING KICKED)
Xelous replied to IJoeGamer (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
I've had a nightmare this evening with this problem, curiously only on my laptop, my other machine seems to be v1.170 without a hitch. Let me explain how I solved my problem though. Steps to Manually Update Battle Eye Client DLL 1. Visit the battleye site and download the latest client DLL (http://www.battleye.com/download.html) - Yes I know this says v1.62, but ignore that the DLL you get is "BEClient.dll" and its the first link there with a current hash (BE Client for Windows (32-bit) - MD5: 71afa956d12a523878d674b8fa7d7988). 2. You need to move this into the folder "Expansion\BattlEye" wherever your game is. I play through steam, so my game is in: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\Expansion\BattlEye" I take a copy of the BEClient.dll already there (just in case) and copy this new downloaded DLL over the top. 3. I run the game under stream as Administrator once (this step is not needed, strictly speaking, but I do it just in case). 4. Run DayZ up again, when you connect to a server and are in the lobby you will see the server message "BattlEye Client Initialised v1.170..." Trouble Shooting 1. Spotting a bad installed Client version: Connect to a server, and wait in the lobby - pick a place 1 - 40 but do not press "OK". Watch the bottom left, you will see the message (in grey) "BattlEye Client Initialised v1.169..." (or an earlier version). You will see the server say: "BattlEye Server: Requires Client version 1.170... Updating"... (or an other version) and this will fade away... You can try to connect to a server now, but after taking a few steps you maybe disconnected with the message "BattlEye Client Failed to Update", this means you need to update manually as described above. 2. Spotting a bad BEClient.DLL Download: When you visit the BattlEye site to download the DLL you will see a string of characters labelled "MD5 hash", this is a unique code identifying the DLL you just downloaded. You will need an MD5 checker to check the file (http://download.cnet.com/MD5-Checker/3000-2092_4-10410639.html). Select the file you just downloaded into just such a tool. Select (highlight with the mouse) copy and paste the MD5 hash from the web site into the tool and compute... They should match. But please beware, there can be fake MD5 checkers out there, which will install who knows what on your machine, so don't just blindly download some program!!! I link the one from CNet only as they are a reputable source - yes they install adware - but generally they're hack & nasty stuff free. 3. Other versions of BattlEye: You may find a copy of the BattlEye which originally installed with your game from DVD or via Steam in a folder such as this: C:\Program Files (x86)\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA\BattlEye this is the copy installed by Bohemia with Arma, rather than the Operation Arrow Head expansion, and I do not recommend touching this in anyway, I've left mine well alone, so should you... 4. Uninstalled BattlEye If you have uninstalled BattlEye in some way, reinstall BattlEye before continuing to try and play. Via Steam do this by highlighting the game in your steam library, right clicking and opting to "Reinstall BattlEye client". Stand alone Installers - I've no idea sorry. 5. BattlEye circumvention: If you've bypassed BattlEye for some reason - hacking/cracking/personal servers/arma 2/other mods, then I suggest you flatten your machine (the whole thing, back to bare hard drive space) and reinstall to play legitimately before you get switched to within an inch of your digital DayZ life with the global ban stick. 6. "I got banned for changing my BEClient.DLL".... I've heard this one before, no you didn't... You can run any legitimate version of the DLL, you just get disconnected from the server if it can't update, or denied connection if its too old. If you got actually banned for changing the DLL, see point 5. -
I didn't think this was a bug, I thought it intentional.

I am so jammy you could paint me brown and call me dodger... Allow me to explain, I posted this, as I was so worried... Well, I got on quick when I got home, and before the game loaded the wife went for a shower... I ended up on a night time server, crawling... and Crawling... and CRAWLING.... The nearest thing to the location in the woods, a Deer Stand... "What you doing?" she called... "Oh just going slowly through the tree's, I see a Deer Stand to the north"... "Right oh, I thought I heard you crawling about, don't do anything before I'm there"... The sweat is pouring down me... The dog tries to come in to snuggle around my feet, I kick him away... I AM ON A MISSION!!! I can see it... I can see the ladder!.... Oh holy hell, there's a hopper, a copper and a pair of soldiers... Crawl man Crawl!!! The shower trips off... She's coming... Gurgle form a zombie.... Gurgle from the plug hole.... She's coming down the landing.... Up, up up the ladder we go... MORPHINE!!!! Ding DONG!!!!! I jab it up, inject... and voila. I AM SAVED!!!!! I can hear Cool & the Gang singing in my minds eye... I can see a ticker tape parade... I'm so happy I'm swinging around in the chair just as the wife rounds the door frame. "What dafaq you doing twirling around looking so happy for, there's just some 1911 clips and a pile of empty cans!" She will never know, least until she reads this.... Shhhhh.... Don't tell her.

Oh holy hell, I'm going to get roasted when I get home... My wife and I play our character together... Trouble is... I just nipped on for a quick shufty around whilst I'm at work... This was fine, until I sort of fired the Enfield by accident... I don't know what happened, I was in the tree's looking down on a smallish town, went to get my binoculars out and BANG! Next thing I see 5-6 Z's zerging at me, and I hop it into the tree's. I'm zigging and zagging, trying to get a bit of space between me and them... And also between me and the town so I can shoot these sods down without attracting more... I zig BANG BANG... two down.... I Zag... BANG another.... I Zig and Zag... BANG BANG two more, reload... Zig.... BANG Missed shit.... CRUNCH He broke our collective legs.... Bang, he's dead.... I bandaged the wounds, ate some food, took a drink and then reflected... "Holy Mother of God the wife is going to kill me when I get home and have to explain why our guy, our join guy, has broken legs". Sod Zombies... My Wife is way scarier.

Server Tags Demystified: How To Find The Right Server
Xelous replied to howichrgelazer's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
At present there are very many servers running with tags not even remotely related to their true settings or software configuration. I'd ask all the admins out there to please update them, you look fools showing such terribly bad banner lines. And also, update the server-side software/install - to clear the user posted text and put the current info. -
I have the opposite problem, I got a hatchet and matches... but no hunting knife to gather meat with... I however won't be trying to light fires with grenades, that's an accident just waiting to happen... I can advise however that of the times I've found matches, they've either been in out-houses - literally the shitta out back - or in supermarkets. Go look in some out houses before you 'nade that pine.
