Two bones I have to pick about the theory of barricades, what they are meant to do and how I feel as though they have developed their own entitlement mentality. First, barricading as a means of safe storage of items is an entirely confusing argument. You are essentially constructing a giant "there is human activity within" signpost and your not expecting all manner of unwelcome guests to intrude? Hiding in plain sight, concealment and storing items on your person will always and forever be the best 'solution' to safely storing gear. Second, barricading might imply an intention to "man the walls" and set up shop but I'm willing to bet nobody is actually going to role-play taking watch for multiple hours at a time. To implement spawn protection areas tips the scales massively in favour of barricades. They get to enjoy wanderlust whilst having their base protected without the implied upkeep in terms of man hours. What's that saying about cake and eating it? It also isn't entirely against the ethos of a of a post apocalyptic sim having your base ransacked from the inside out. On public servers, final release, there should be in principle no 'magical chests' or areas that are arbitrarily inaccessible to players or cannot be accessed. Mods on hives different story, take your own hive in your own direction. Ideal thoughts dealt with lets get into the meat of barricades from why and how. Why barricade? Functional Barricading Suggestions TL:DR *Magical chests and exclusion zones go against the public dayz ethos and should not be included going forward *If you understand barricades as a hard counter to thieves you have it entirely reversed, barricades are a signpost for theft and should not be understood as a counter to theft *Barricading implies intention to man the walls but in reality nobody is going to do this therefore you don't deserve a feature that does it for you especially in this style of game. Discussion going forward: *Where do you stand on the public server side of 'magical chests' *What are some functional barricading options and interactions from barricades to countering them? *Will getting ransacked from the inside out doom base building from the outset? Is it a problem? Who but clans will consistently raid bases in coordinating all in attacks? Is this the main fear? Is it really that oppressive? Preventing All Ins Look forward to your thoughts!

The misunderstood barricade, the limits of them
Trizzo replied to Trizzo's topic in General Discussion
Amazing response! I hate fallicious arguments, especially people who use strawmen to bolster their position. I certinally I hope i did not give the impression i was begging the quesiton. If i did it was a grevious error. To eleborate. 'Base building', as far as i understand, in various iterations of DayZ (mods, epoch) has primarily invloved hard "exlcusion zones". I am aware that the devs have stated that nothing will "not be able to be not be broken into" in the final build. My concern is not with their understanding (and at the risk of sound like a somewhat messianic douche) but the broader commmunity and expections. My views align pretty consistently with the devs and my interest is in participiting in this public vision of DayZ. So that is where i drew from my magical chest examples, from the only examples of barricading that I was aware of. Yes there has been barbed wire, tents and now persistent storage (albeit briefly) but this is not "barricading" in the sense of what has been done in EPOCH/Mods nor what is going to occour in the future. Therefore i use the term "misconception". It is going to be different. I'm getting the terms of reference in order. Now...i agree entirely with your other points! This might come as a shock considering i said no "exclusion zones" but i am not oppossed in theory to preventing a server-swap-base-all-in, because the devs have stated that everything will be enterable, it is just a matter of how. Already salient points have been raised. Preventing All Ins -
Haha yeah, Chernarus wanderlust is going to be lifetime problem for me, me thinks...a disciplined junkie gotta pace it out though

Agreed. Hunger needs to be a core part of the practical and existential experience. The inspiration for dayz has it's roots in starvation but this aspect of the game has net yet been realised or accepted in theory by a chunk of the community. Disagree with starting gear, food etc. The hopefully combination of small game, berries, more abundant crafting, more tools, less gun spawns etc... Is going to lead to a situation where survival is intuitive and possible wherever you spawn. This is my understanding of where things are heading according to dev blogs etc....

Oh this again....for the life of me I don't get these posts.

Ping! I was a little suprised but only a little...

As a complete MG sucker it's a shame I've not played ACE mod or got into ARMA extensively. I've fully unlocked support class in RO and BF games I've played and one of my favourite mil possessions is an Aus Army machine gun manual for an FN MAG we found buried away at school years ago! It's one of those great stoner myths, like tumbling bullets, that MGs are inaccurate or incapable of precision. There is a sense that they are meant to 'pepper' an area with only a general sense of lethality. Dead wrong...
-
Love all LMG/GPMGs, my fondest gun battle in dayz ever was with one and they certainly have a place! A proper loot economy and encumbrance system is where your balance is provided for machine gun skeptics. I love an MG as a lone wolf, it gives you a lot of flexibility.

Mistakes you see people do all the time in DayZ

Looking for firm info on just how spawning items and persistence will exactly work...I'm surprised I searched and nothing really came up or rather tmi and multiple dev logs to sift through... Example. If I drop a note in a bush when the system is working as intended how long us it going to stay there? Will no new paper notes spawn once the threshold is reached in the central economy? One thing I'd love to get going is geo-caching for rare loot and orientation competitions. To achieve this notes would need to persist for some time to let participants collect the grid references and clues. Is this going to happen? What about dead drops? If I find a gun can I stash it in a bush for later and deny someone else the chance of picking it up? Does it refresh after server reset? Essentially, what is the timing of persistence? How long will things persist? A lot will depend on this

So i might be be doing this wrong or this isn't my job but whatever it seems like it could be worth sharing considering i have seen zip on this forum... Somebody posted this link earlier on reddit...http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/generic?p0=204&iso=20140912T18&msg=DayZ%20Developer%20Livestream%20@%20twitch.tv/dayz. Full credit to that person on reddit. I FB myself the link, not trying to whore it up, his thread is friggin burried under all the experimental/accouncments. I wanted confirmation so the wonderful hicks quickly responded with this about 15 minutes ago... https://twitter.com/Hicks_206/status/510358680160968704 So i guess spread the mofoing word! Again full credit to the reddit person who posted this originally. If you find it send some love their way and please link it! Sorry if this was going to be saved for offical page but it's on twitter now!

My eyes... But seriously where is the rope access, mountaineering etc...sigh this is the only all sorts outdoor adventure game you are likely to see, got to make an excess of demands!

minding my own business then suddenly *hears bullet fly past head*

I once logged from hackers, long, long ago in the mod... I still feel dirty. I wouldn't do it again even if some good gear was at stake. I like the satisfaction of surviving whatever bullshit comes my way so long as the immediate situation has passed I don't have issue with logging off. -
No humanity system. It's done. Clothing and behaviour is your only point of reference...welcome to DayZ

I'm not disagreeing with you! Give us the authentic bits and pieces and I support it. My mistake, thought there were two different people and not meaning anything too personal. If it came across that way sorry! IMHO after market parts for a mosin is akin to polishing a turd. If you could somehow get a night force, bipod, compensatator all the bells and whistles, it's not going to anything for 60-70 year old mass produced battle rifle. I simply need to temper the reverence for the mosin nagant, people are OBSESSED.
-
Oh man...nobody has even talked about the quality of optic as a factor in this long discussion! Choice of glass is far more important in achieving consistent accuracy. A cruddy fixed power 3.5 simply doesn't cut the mustard for consistency and shots without reference. Changing The reverence for a push feed, two locking lug clumper, that had to have its bolt turned turned after production to avoid silhouetting a shooter and improve basic ergonomics. Not to mention the gravel trigger, sticky action... common sense is entirely lost when talking about 'sniping'. So many crazy claims and assertions have had to go unaddressed...there are just so many
-
The best type of wrong people are the smarmy sounding ones. Barrel to bipod, the worst idea ever, terrible bipod is terrible. And no the mosin cannot use that stud. The foreend to thin, you will touch the barrel, crack the wood after repeated firing or just horribly effected the accuracy anyway. Want to ruin a perfectly functioning mosin, drill that swivel into the wood. It's not plug and play. As for you OP agreement! Give me bracing, drill/taps, rails or the ability to make brackets or loot em.

Love ya but going to have to disagree entirely...dayz puts the tools and mechanics there and the user succeeds or fails based on their knowledge. This is the ethos.

With the exception of the USA handguns are not the most commonly available firearm and I'd hazard a guess long arms are the most common firearm variety in the US regardless of the handgun culture. They are a lot harder to obtain in most countries and are banned outright where other firearms are permitted ie: UK. The point of a double barrel/breach loading repeater is practicality, it's a self contained unit that's why I pick it. The reality of non (doh edit) cylinder pistols is more moving parts and pieces. After market mags and even your package deal mags aren't cheap. The secondary market is where profits are made as the margin on guns is quite small. So thats's why is the pistol pretty much okay. Chest holster, speed, concealableility, handy zombie dispatcher, high ROF, there are many, many benefits for a pistol right now. Could be room for movement mag spawn rate, heck maybe double wouldn't break the balance I feel but a pistol, with a good mag or two, is a special combo.

M4A1 Can i be added back to Genral Military?

I for one cannot understand the M4 obsession...could somebody explain this extremely plain platform and caliber to me? -
Readable books about Hunting/Fishing/Gardening/...
Trizzo replied to ThreeDots's topic in Suggestions
When various teams add content, such as the new hunting/animal dev team, I hope books go in that are tied it probable locations and real biology. Pigs in gullys, water sources, deer active at dusk/dawn. But impro waste land surivival guides could make their way into circulation as notes. Once item persistence is in I'm starting geo caching competitions with way points and grid references....watch this space :) I suspect a lot of user content when persistence happens. -
Kids are not sacrosanct,I don't understand the extra venom throw their way. Nor why people expect more from less, kids are kids because that's what they are defined as! You should know what to expect.
-
A rather spurious claim considering range finders are coming back, considering how generous finding 0 is anyway. The ability for a Mosin to group with a great deal of accuracy is not really here or there. They are rough, ready, mass produced rifles and should not be compatible with LRS or bipod unless they add a drill tap set or are modern varieties. I'm all for tools and add ons done right but a jimmy job is not going to outperform even your basic hunting rifle (Tikka, Remington) in terms of accuracy. However! I will concede that there is a need for a modern LR platform, civ and mil varieties. A ballistic turret scope wouldn't go amiss as well and would be fantastic if they add correct zeroing. When the sum of sniping involves on average four zero corrections I do have a sense that a lot of complaints are cry wolf, I don't think it's going to get any easier for y'all.
