It's been pretty great being able to stick with these servers from their inception and watch how little societies develop. Seeing clans form and clash on NY8 really made me realize how this kind of multiplayer sandbox format has so much potential for emergent gameplay. nethack+left4dead+eveonline+whatever - DayZ scratches so many itches.
