I felt the same way at first, but I quickly adapted. My strategy on spawn: 1) Sprint to closest town/city. 2) Find large warehouse/barn with 2+ doors. 3) Grab one of the many axes that are usually on the floor, and possibly gun. 4) Run around the town/city and gear up - for buildings with only 1 door, run around corners/fences/buildings to get zombies off your ass, then crouch/crawl to your destination. Once you learn how to deal with the zombies you can just sprint into a town and gear up with the basics.

Why hasn't OP just used Six Updater yet?
-
How long does it take for loot to respawn? Will it respawn if you stay in town/area, or do you have to leave the area and come back? I'm wondering because I'd like to set up a raid route and go around in kind of a big circle and know when-about's loot will be respawning at the beginning of my raid route.

The playstyle of DayZ (and it's appeal and replay value) are about true survival and the true threat of death. You WILL die. And you WILL die again. And again. And again. The point is to hone your skills, learning to scavenge effectively, avoid/kill zombies and avoid/kill other survivors/bandits. My advice is on your first spawn, run to the nearest town and sprint around the zombies - get a feel for how they move, how you can run away from them, etc. Grab an axe/hatchet and get a feel for how you can kill them with that. I find that it is better to learn the mechanics and get a feel for the game BEFORE spending tons of hours crawling around trying to get gear, just to die by a few zombies because you have no experience.

Use Six Updater after installing and launching both Arma2 and expansion. Once in Six Updater, select the DayZ mod and wait for server list to generate. Choose server with good ping (3 green bars) and click join. Wait between 60 seconds and 4 minutes for loading to finish.

Do they have enterable buildings that zombies don't spawn in/near?
ThuggleS replied to welch's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Not that I know of, because every building in which you can enter spawns loot, and every place that spawns loot spawns zombies. For a "safehouse" I find a secluded, tree-covered forest area and set up lots of tents to hold my items. -
Lol, wut? None of that made any sense.
-
So according to the DayZ wiki, tents can hold up to 5 backpacks. But...can you have a backpack full of stuff and then put it in the tent, and the items will stay in the backpack? I know tents are glitchy and everything, but assuming it DOESN'T glitch, is this the case?

Thanks!

Today I have been legitimally global banned for cheating
ThuggleS replied to Thadeum's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You have a point, and people like OP don't really bother me, but having hackers/scripters gear you up (or stumbling upon a hacked crate of gear) really isn't what DayZ is about. -

ThuggleS replied to Thadeum's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
What I got out of that wall of text was, "Because hackers were killing me and the bugs were annoying I decided to become a script-kiddie". Yeah...I won't miss you. -
So, everyone on the server dies at the same time (you can see all the death messages) and then the death screen shows all of us gathered in one place. I'm assuming hacker... Which pisses me the fuck off. I don't mind being killed by zombies or legitimately by another player, but just killing everyone in a server? I fucking hate people in this world.

Just started playing today and my first impression is, "Since I start with no weapon and every place I go to has a bunch of zombies, how am I supposed to get any items when I am forced to run away from all the zombies?". Are there locations with good item spawns that have little to no zombies? What am I missing here? EDIT: Thanks for your responses and tips, guys. I have gotten much, much better at this game now. I have learned to raid buildings much more effectively, escape zombies much easier, and am now geared up pretty well with all the essentials (GPS, matchbox, hatchet, hunting knife, canteens, and a few good guns). I even made a tent out in the wilderness by a lake which is my current base of operations. Hopefully I can play this guy for a good long time before someone snipes me again!

How to gear up on respawn while avoiding zombies?
ThuggleS replied to ThuggleS's topic in New Player Discussion
Thanks for the good post, but at this point I do know all of that (but I appreciate you typing it up nonetheless!). Before I started playing I accepted that this game is about death - permanent death. So I went in with the knowledge that I will die, and die again, and lose all the stuff I collected...again. But hey, that's what makes the adventure fun - knowing the high stakes. -
Apparently English isn't your strong point, so I'll slow it down for you. As I've stated now multiple times, anyone CAN build a computer (like you, my first build was as a kid). But if you are not willing to properly prepare, research, pick your parts well, and be willing to troubleshoot anything you screw up and fix it, building computers probably isn't for you. Now I expect you will once again quote this and provide a "counter-argument" that is actually saying the same thing and agreeing with me anyways.
-
Lol, if you think that anyone can simply build a computer and not run into any problems without doing a fair amount of research and preparation you are crazy. I agree, anyone CAN do it, but it's not quite that simple.
-
Not true at all, really. I mean, the hardest part about "building" a computer is picking out your parts list. But beyond that, it is more than just using a screwdriver - if you've ever built one by yourself I'm sure you know this. And then of course when something doesn't work you have to be able to troubleshoot it (i.e., did I plug in the power switch pin header correctly? Is there a BIOS setting wrong? etc).

Ok, so through experimentation I know that GPS notes are saved for the server you make them on and will not appear on other servers (which sucks IMO). But I saw someone write that if you make a note on your GPS everyone in the server can see it. Is this true? If so, better not note my tents...

GPS Notes - Are they private or public?
ThuggleS replied to ThuggleS's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
That's how I assumed it worked at first, because that's what made sense. -

ThuggleS replied to ThuggleS's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
No, it's not like I NEED to, but it is not intuitive to think that if you have a GPS in your hand and make a note on it that it will magically be uploaded to everyone else's GPS's...lol -
No duh, that's why I said if he CAN'T build it himself they are great sites. Not everyone wants to learn how to build a computer.

A modern i3 with a $100 GPU will do the trick. I still say build your own if you can, if not, use CyberPowerPC or iBuyPower - companies like Dell/HP/Alienware have VERY high market on things like graphics cards. EDIT: Or, buy a cheap PC with an i3 from anyone you want, go buy a $100 GPU, and pop it in. As long as the power supply is ~500w you should be fine.
-
It is difficult/expensive to get good gaming PCs from companies like HP/Dell. If you are unable to build your own, use companies like CyberPowerPC and iBuyPower to build it for you. Their markup is low and you can much more easily configure and purchase a gaming PC without spending $2000-3000 from HP/Dell/Alienware.
-
Nope, sorry (MAYBE on the lowest possible settings, but even then I suspect low FPS). I am using an i7 with a GTX 560 Ti (a ~$250 GPU). I recommend at least a $200 GPU to play with med/high settings with good FPS.
