I have recently entered into PvP after about a week of playing this game....and it's hard. My plan was to go to the airstrip and pick up some weapons and head straight into Elektro and start looking for people to kill; however, it is really hard. I know that sounds silly, but I am just reverting back into my old habit of gathering weapons and hoarding them, while trying to avoid combat. Every time I hear a gunshot around me I look around a bit and if I don't find the player within a few minutes I just log :( I really think I am missing a huge portion of this game by not engaging in PvP any help involving my fears of PvP would be extremely appreciated.

Question for the standalone.
Slickback (DayZ) replied to Ashnik's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Speaking out of experience......and IMO, what should be done is everyone's gear/stats will be reset when standalone is released regardless of the amount of play time you have accumulated. Mind you, this is what is usually done when games are ready to be released. It might be different for DayZ who knows -
Just screwed a hacker and feel like an absolute champ right now
Slickback (DayZ) replied to Hysterics's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Wouldn't go as far as saying you had screwed him over, but it was a good read :). More importantly though, you indirectly answered a question I had always had! Being the victim of many teleporation hacks, I always forget to alt+F4 when it occurs. However, I never knew if I logged in after I just alt+F4ed I would spawn where I dc/ed (in the air) or on the ground. Guess I'm going to have to time my alt f4 very carefully next time I get teleported into the clouds -

Why do they always have to shoot? (My first PK)
Slickback (DayZ) replied to Soupee's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I think I am answering your question. If I'm not I apologize. When I first started out I hated killing other players, I still do actually, and never did. Of course I would pay the consequences and get killed because of trusting what seemed like friendly people. Eventually I was fed up with it and decided I couldn't take it anymore, and killed most players on sight. Anyways, my answer is players have just become conditioned to shoot when they see other players, because in their experience if they don't the other player will shoot first. That's my take on it. -

Where are the best places for loot
Slickback (DayZ) replied to Brutal-Hunter's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Judging by his post he seemed like a new player. From personal experience when I was completely new, I had no idea that the name of the town I was in was displayed briefly when I logged in. Nonetheless, it was an excuse to try and role play. -

Slickback (DayZ) replied to Brutal-Hunter's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm gonna role play as you...kind of I suck at it. Jes, I have no idea where I am on the map!! Those stupid zombies would just not stop chasing me. Well there is a town over there....hmmm.. maybe I could go check it out for landmarks to get my bearings. As I approach the edge of the town, I notice a relatively small blue, rectangular sign. It says something in Russian; sadly, my Russian is a bit rusty, so I can't read it. I think to myself, perhaps it is the name of the town? Unfortunately, my map does not have the towns in Russian names. So I bring up Dayzdb.com/map and thankfully it has it on there! I am in some town called Stary Sobor......how did I get here =/. Well I guess I better get heading back to the coast to more familiar ground. But, what if I lose my way on the trip there? I don't want to be constantly looking at maps online. I quickly remember that clouds always move east and with that fact of information, I follow the clouds to the shore. TLDR: The Russian name of the town you are in will be displayed outside of it, usually next to the road, on a blue rectangular sign. Use dayzdb.com/map to find it where you are. Also clouds will always move east you can follow them to the shore. -
Why not make everything server sided?
Slickback (DayZ) posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
TLDR is at bottom As of a few hours ago, I have had this game for a week (queue party poppers and streamers). The one thing I noticed both first hand and through the players here on this lovely forum, is the problems with hackers and script kiddies. Until today for some bizarre reason, it had not occurred in my mind that most of this game is client sided. I had only found out through the help of a very knowledgeable and generous player that DayZ, was in fact, client sided! Now I'm not too familiar with client sided and server sided games, but I know enough to know that server sided games are extremely more difficult to hack than client sided. In fact, it is a felony to even hack a server sided game. At least to my knowledge making things server sided costs a minimal amount of money to do. For instance, if you are familiar with Realm of the Mad God, it started out a few years ago with only two developers and it was client sided. However, in the first year the developers had a huge hacking problem, much like DayZ, and made everything server-sided. After that hacking had almost vanished. TLDR: So my question is, why can't Rocket and the other developers make DayZ server sided? Since the mod is still based off of Arma 2 would it be considered some type of copyright infringement? -

Well that is disappointing.....I was sort of hoping for DayZs' hacking problems to be over with soon. Oh well, thanks for the informative posts (both of you). -
Where are the best places for loot
Slickback (DayZ) replied to Brutal-Hunter's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yes! One of my favorite places to loot was Stary Sober's military camp. It has pretty good gear drops. I have gotten at least 1 gun from each of the categories (snipers, shotguns, etc) there. But be careful it may not seem like a popular place; however, bandits sure love to hide there and put one in your head when your looting :P -
Why not make everything server sided?
Slickback (DayZ) replied to Slickback (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Hmm, the majority of Arma 2's revenue was due to the fact that people wanted to play DayZ. As far as my knowledge goes of the subject, it seems both DayZ developers and Arma 2 developers are helpful towards one another. So going off what you said, could DayZ be hosted on Arma 2's side to allow data to be server sided? -

Can I wear a ghillie suit safely?
Slickback (DayZ) replied to Man vs Wild's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Hmmmm, when I put my ghillie on I didn't lose any items. But, it couldn't hurt to take your backpack off just in case. Just DON'T lay your backpack under a tree. I experienced a weird glitch that involved a car tire under a tree that I had dropped and wanted to pick up -.- .......10 minutes later the car tire was still under the tree and my keyboard was through my monitor. Might have exaggerated that slightly. Point is just don't drop items under fur trees! -
Today I have been legitimally global banned for cheating
Slickback (DayZ) replied to Thadeum's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Oh well, I do not wish to argue anymore, although I definitely love to! It's like a battle of the brains! Anyways, I do agree with some of the arguments that some people mentioned. Mostly the point regarding even subtle hacks can drastically influence other players game experience. Maybe if we're lucky hackers will be non-existent in the standalone version.....probably not, but it can't hurt to hope :) Best of luck to you OP, I'm sure you just a nice fellow who chose a questionable path =p Edit #1: You didn't see anything grammar Nazis! Ok...maybe you did, but it's gone now -
Today I have been legitimally global banned for cheating
Slickback (DayZ) replied to Thadeum's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Truthfully I don't mind some of the hackers. In fact, sometimes I think they make them game interesting. For example, MY VERY FIRST time in game I spawned on shore and I hadn't even walked 100M and a hacker teleported right in front of me. Really it was just like "poof" he's there. It definitely caught me off guard, but I couldn't do anything about it I had no weapons. Like a second later he started blaring that one Hey What's Going On song and just stared at me while I stared back. He literally just stood there staring at me, as I started back, for a good 10 seconds, and honestly I had no idea what was happening. Then just as we had first met he was gone within an eyeblink...it was one of the funniest things I have ever experienced on this game so far. Anyways, my point is not all hackers are bad (and you can quote me on that idc..take it home with you) Sure there are some that will instantly wipe out the server, even though they damn sure do not need any gear and are just killing everyone to ruin their time. However, based off OP he sounded like a relative harmless hacker and overall a nice fellow. I mean sure if he was one of those guys that instant kills people for no reason, then I would be up and arms with the rest of you. But he seemed relatively harmless and had probably had little impact on any other players. -

Slickback (DayZ) replied to Thadeum's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Hah it's funny my first few days were very similar to yours. In games like this I had always understood teammates > gear. They would make the experience of any game a lot more charming and just generally more fun. So naturally I tried to find teammates. NO matter what I did...from helping completely new players get above average gear and showing them the ropes to just running in Elektro trying to find a friendly person, I would get shot. I came to terms with the rather barbaric behavior displayed by seemingly innocent survivors and decided to go alone and just look for weapons. Over the next 3ish days I can't tell you the amount of times I was killed by other hackers. I was teleported in the air to my death, instant death when I logged in, instant killed when in game, and the infamous Thunderdome. Almost all of those bugs you had experienced, I had experienced and I feel your pain I really do. At times I even looked up hacking because my mind set was "what's the point of trying to progress through this game if I am just going to be teleported in 1000M in the air and fall to my death?" However, I moved on and decided that I won't let a few a lot of bad eggs ruin my time on DayZ. I completely understand if you tried to hack, even though I know I am going to get flamed for this. When you and I purchased this game I'm sure we had a completely different perspective of what it was really going to be and it turned out it was far from it. Thankfully this game is still in Alpha and it has A LOT of potential to be a great game. Anyways, I don't blame you for hacking. Here's to hopefully a new start in standalone :)- 199 replies

Help me conquer my fear of PvP :)
Slickback (DayZ) replied to Slickback (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Hmmm I really am grateful for the advice. But, I have one person telling me to go to Elektro and Chern for PvP, while the other person says Stary or NWAF. I know both areas are very popular for PvP combat, but considering I am still new to this game with a decent grasp on this game, which area would be best go to? NWAF+Stary or Chern+ Elektro? Edit #1: Oh very nice post Drunkpunk. While I was typing this question you had posted in my forum so...I guess you answered it. Anyways, I will take your advice and try Cherno on a High Pop server and see where it takes me. If anyone else has any input feel free to speak up :) -

"Loading" seems slower than ever
Slickback (DayZ) replied to ssimmons's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Haha funny that you mention that. As of 20ish minutes ago I have experienced very slow loading and waiting to create character screens. Also these forums are very slow :) -
I will agree with Helicopter Hunter. IMO any place with a vehicle spawn in there, let alone two is a bad place to have a base. But, I am considered a newbie in Dayz so take everything I say with a grain of salt :)

Would you Abort if in Danger of death?
Slickback (DayZ) replied to abnormalweeny's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm just being smart about it, regardless if I fall under the category of a coward. If I'm crossing an open field and I notice a some dude in a ghillie suit with an M107 just 400M out why should I stay and die? It's not like I would have anything he wants (got this game Sunday) and I would lose days of progress just so maybe he could snag my beans. But, if I'm say in Elektro and I'm getting in a firefight with some other dude that isn't all the way across the city taking shots at me with a sniper, then ye I will fight him. Call me a coward if you want I just prefer to not feel like I had wasted the previous 10 hours trying to get gear. -
Would you Abort if in Danger of death?
Slickback (DayZ) replied to abnormalweeny's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Honestly if I was in your situation and a sniper was firing at me ....I would definitely think about it. If I had absolutely no idea where the shots were coming from and I had no way of getting out, then I would have probably aborted.....I'm not losing all my gear to somebody I can't even see. However, if it says was just some guy with an M4A1 or AKM and I could at least see him and get to adequate cover I would engage him to either his death or my death. That's my take on it. Come at me haters Edit #1- Forgot to mention. Good question OP it is definitely a very controversial topic. I had a good time reading through the posts Edit #2 (if anyone cares =p) - I am still new to the game. I haven't even driven a vehicle yet, besides a bicycle. So some of the players that are combat logging are doing so because they haven't even experienced any of the game yet and are not ready to get involved in PvP. Just keep that in mind -
I don't have a gps so I can't use GR: 037083 in game; however, I used dayzdb.com/map and noticed that although the icon for the ATV was located at the top of the mountain the coords were way off. So I checked both where the icon was on the map and the actual cords. I tried 4 different servers with no previal...I might just be unlucky but before I server hop again I just want to make sure it is in one of those two spots. TLDR: Where is the ATV at/near Green Mountain Edit #1: I checked around Google and Youtube for at least 10-15 minutes and couldn't find any resource that showed me where it was besides the cords and icon on map. Really didn't want to spam this forum, but I can't walk to destinations any longer, it is too slow :(
