How to stop people from playing Day Z
amentes replied to dirtystinkinninja's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This is pretty much the attitude you have to have if you plan on enjoying thsi game. A large majority of us have been in the same boat as the OP, and it is frustrating, but calling it quits for good is a bit of an over reaction. I can honestly say that I get massively PO'd and need to bash my drumkit into submission whenever a 4hour+ char gets dead. Man, I hate it when it happens. But I still come back and start over. 90 hours in now, and I've died twelve times. Last three deaths, I'd been alive for over 16 hours of in-game playtime. Currently I'm at 14, still going strong. I died a lot in the start, but I learned. -
The game is still capped at 500 view distance?
amentes replied to super pretendo's topic in New Player Discussion
WalkerDown, I can see where you're coming from with that, but can't people with lower end PCs just tune down their Detail settings? Resolution is important for seeing things, but Detail isn't, really. Honestly, if you wanna cheat, just turn down Terrain Detail. Removes all grass/shrubbery, making prone-sniping TROLOLOL if the other players have it to Very High :P And even then, this is ArmA, a game notoriously power-hungry. If people wanna sign up for it with sub-par specs, that's their own business, isn't it? Especially when turning down some settings can actually make the game easier. -
Anyone think the aiming in Arma is strange?
amentes replied to bonafide's topic in New Player Discussion
Bullets being "lower than your crosshair", that's because the barrel is located below the sights. The further away you are, the less of an effect this will have, but if you're way up in the face or an enemy, or even worse, if you're trying to shoot in an upwards angle, you'll see a massive difference and that forces you to aim higher than you otherwise would. It's just a matter of being used to all the other games, which basically fire the bullet out of the sight, and not the barrel. -
If you drop something on the ground/floor, don't expect it to be there when you return, basically. It will stay for a while, not sure how long, but the normal despawn/respawn of loot is about thirty minutes, if I recall? I'd imagine items you drop would adhere to the same rules. At least, not too long ago I was lugging around an AKS-74Kobra. Dropped it in a deer stand when I found an M16, as I was low on ammo for the Kobra, but had picked up a few STANAGs earlier. Naturally, I then found plenty of Kobra ammo in the next two Stands, but when I returned to find the Kobra I dropped, it had despawned (or been taken, though I doubt it).

Aren't Z's supposed to die with one shot?
amentes replied to MrQueebs's topic in New Player Discussion
Feel free to correct if wrong: Any headshot is lethal. Chest shots: Makarov, G17 and M9 are 3 M9SD I believe is 4 M1911 and Revolver is 1 STANAG weapons is 2 AK-74 variants is 2 AKM is 1 Snipers are 1 MP5 variants is 3 M249 is 2 M240 and Mk48 is 1 FAL is 1 It should then also be noted that all damage goes down at increasing ranges. How quickly it does so depends on what round you're using. For example, the damage of the 5.56 goes down somewhat quickly, while the 7.62s have a higher range. The .50s, M107 and AS50 sniper rifles, should keep their lethality at extreme ranges, above and beyond one click. Some of this is from normal ArmA experience, as I haven't used all of those weapons in DayZ. -
2 ideas in one, (trading and bandits)
amentes replied to Jack Lz's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
ummm just because its sandbox' date=' doesnt mean freedom from repurcussions, dont play semantics with me. [/quote'] You're right. It doesn't mean guaranteed freedom from repercussions. However, it does mean that said repercussions have to be handled by the players, and not the game. That's the whole point of this thing, if you want to have a place where players can trade in peace, you gotta make it yourself. How you go about doing that is your business. It may be practically impossible. -
See, the funny thing is I've been doing it since I started, and after about 80 hours at this point, I've only died to it once. When you're not near the "popular" areas, then it simply isn't a problem. Mid-north, I've been shot at four times, once by a CZ and thrice by a DMR. One of those times, the player on the right side of the DMR actually knew how to use it (or just got lucky) and ended up breaking my leg, making me an easy target for the follow up shot. Other three times, I was never hit at all. Outrunning some dude sitting miles away with a sniper rifle isn't really all that hard. I'm much more worried about him seeing me crawling around with Zs all around me.

What's Your opinion on the best 'common' weapon
amentes replied to Sminky's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It should also be said that Deer Stands are bloody well everywhere, and I've found they contain: AKMs M16s AKS-74 AKS-74Kobra Glock 17 Of those weapons, I'd personally take the Kobra, mainly just for the really good sights. It's also the least noisy of the long arms. I'm currently carrying an M16 though, as I ran out of ammo for the 74. I've been told that you can, on rare occasions, find DMRs in those stands as well. -
Stupid Question but I have to make sure
amentes replied to bluezangetsu's topic in New Player Discussion
+1 I don't think you need "-nosplash", but it makes the game start up quicker so it's nice to use it regardless. Steam users probably have it easiest of all. -
I don't usually crawl near Zs. Honestly, I prefer getting a few after me and then killing them, to the possibility of having them eat me alive before I can get up from the crawling stance. Plus, if I'm crawling through a field of Zs and some player opens up on me? Not a chance man.

Only one I've seen, only one the Wiki lists. Also, I'm pretty sure the only Thermal gear you can find is off of crashed Helos. Not even found in Barracks. Makes sense too, considering how insanely OP it is :P

Cheating death through disconnects
amentes replied to 's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The reason MMOs can take the hardline approach is that there's usually not a lot of consequence involved. The same can't in any way be said for DayZ. Honestly, I'd rather any system be lenient, and then having to rely on video evidence to catch people who do it. I'd rather have people abuse the system than risk screwing over the innocent. People talk about DayZ and "realism" all the time, so lets take a leaf off of that and use a realistic justice system too. -
Cheating death through disconnects
amentes replied to 's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Ok, fair's fair. I wouldn't advocate any solution that ran the risk of people getting screwed hard for a disconnect though. I haven't had too many disconnects myself, but I don't get the impression that the connections are all that stable either. -
That's exactly the point Leo. That should be possible. No matter how many weapons you acquire, the most important skill is to not get spotted, or at least not before you've spotted whomever spots you. That's what makes it such an even playing field. Personally, I think it would be cool if a player couldn't loot his own corpse. That would easily be circumvented by his friend looting it and handing him the items, but it would at least make sure that any loner couldn't "cheat the system" when killed by Zs. A bullet to the skull should be 100% lethal, but I wouldn't mind seeing a higher likelihood of getting "shot unconscious", if we can combine it with the ability to drag/move unconscious players. We have this in the ACE mods, and I think it would be beyond cool to see people trying to actually lay down suppressive fire and attempt to drag their mate to a place where they can patch him up.

Rockets attitude is exactly what is making and will continue to make this mod so damn interesting. So many developers/modders try to appease their target audience, or at least they try to move in the direction that they >think< their audience wants them to, and it usually ends up rather bland and uninteresting. And as has been said before, the harshness of death is exactly what makes this so damn scary. Every time I see a player I don't know, I try to avoid contact. Every time I accidentally bump into another player point-blank, my pulse literally goes crazy, and my heart jumps up into my throat. And then either him or I blow the other into a million pieces. The most scary scenario I have ever encountered so far was a situation where a player came into a barn, and I was, by blind chance, behind some of the stacked wooden crates on the ground floor. The guy never saw me, and he left without bothering to look around the place, but I was afraid to go out of that barn and stayed in there waiting for fifteen minutes, just listening for any sound of movement. Bottom line is, that if death wasn't as punishing as it was. If I could just respawn somewhere of my own choosing, with backup gear at the ready, this mod would be nothing at all.

I can see where the OP is coming from, in that it sucks to be the only one left alive, when you've logged on to have some fun with your mates. But I also think it should be clear to us all that being able to "revive" your mates would take a lot of the tension out of the game. I think we'd see people "sacrificing" themselves against hordes of Zs, as they know their mates would simply get them back on their feet after the clustered Zs were mowed down. In the current system, it's extremely important to cover ones teammates, and friendly fire is a serious hazard in some situations.

Cheating death through disconnects
amentes replied to 's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Problem with that, Sidion, is that nothing stops people from pulling an Alt-F4, or a direct kill of the process in Task Manager. The only viable solution I see would incorporate some sort of detection system that'll keep track of whether you're "engaged". For Zs, this could be as simple as not allowing you to log out within a certain distance of any Z(s). For players, I'd assume it'd be a lot more complicated. -
I'd love to see something like the hunting knife being used to stealth-kill people, but it'd certainly have to be something only possible when behind a target, and even then I'd still want it to require a semi-lengthy animation, and it should be possible for it to be interrupted by the executing player, or by the executing player being shot before the kill is completed. Might be cool to have two animations, one for throat-slit with the other hand being used to muffle the targets mouth, and another for a faster but louder kill. Both would only be used against players, though. I'm in no way an advocate of "swording" the Zs to death. I see those examples used exclusively as a way to take down player-sentries silently, or for the louder and faster method, just lone players. Strictly speaking, I don't mind this not being impossible to use against Zs, but I don't believe it would be practically possible to do so if it was possible. At least, I've never been anywhere close to getting in melee range of a Z, without it being focused on me, thus making it impossible for me to get behind it.

You no longer have to go into swimming animation to fill canteens in ponds. Just go into a shallow bit and right-click your empty canteen in the gear menu.

Serves the guy right. I'd do the same to anyone who goes "Omg, I killed myself a bandit! Yey me!", after shooting me. There's a reason that broken system is getting removed, and that russian guy is it.

Yesterday, after a fresh death, I was down in Elektro trying to find basic kit. After gearing up, I attracted a "crouching" Z, and decided that it wouldn't be safe to try and kite it out of the city, as there were numerous other Zs roaming the fields. So, I headed for the church, thinking that it was a defensible building with only one entrance and lots of cover inside, so even if I did alert other players in my eventual shooting of the crouching Z and whichever other Zs were sure to follow from the shots, I'd stand a good chance of making it. After killing fifty-five of them with my newly-acquired Winchester, and on my way out of the door, I was shot in the back with automatic fire, likely an AK-74 from the sound of it. Seems whomever shot me had previously disconnected in the church, and had logged back in behind me. Goes to show I guess. There's no such thing as a "clear" area when people could potentially log in right inside of it.

FAO: rocket - Kicked by Isomery from the EU17 server for killing him...
amentes replied to Mycaelis's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Honestly, this seems like a major problem with this game. I considered setting up a server myself, but without the ability to password it or have reserved slots for whomever I might want to team up with, I just don't see any incentive for it. It's a major problem when admins act like you say this guy did, but on the other hand, it's also sort of a raw deal when you're paying for a server and not getting anything real out of it. I have no idea how that problem could be solved other than having Bohemia-run servers or by removing the cross-server persistence, both of which I don't really see happening. I suppose the only good news is that you "only" got kicked. I've heard stories of people who claim to have been killed outright by an admin, which of course resets their progress as well. But really, when this game grows even bigger, and I stress "when", I do think we'll start seeing the community do their own policing on which servers have reliable admins and which ones don't, and then simply staying away from the bad apples. I don't believe we'll ever be rid of issues like this as long as players are directly responsible for the hardware. -
A new player's review (WARNING: Rampant whining ahead)
amentes replied to Tvayumat's topic in New Player Discussion
Funny thing is, whenever I've been shot or had to shoot other people in perceived self-defense, it's been either while I was looting the Stary tents, on the NW or SW Airfield, but most of all it's been in middle-of-nowhere barns and villages. Heck, I've even bumped heads with people in forests. I'm about 50 hours in at this point, probably died something like twelve times, usually after I helped people kill Zs chasing them, or after I left another person alone and tried to move out of their path, only to have them shoot me in the back. I ended up getting negative humanity after being boxed inside buildings a few times. Notably the fire station tower. When people still stick their head up after I declare in Side that I will blow them away if they do, then I consider that self-defense. Never been shot inside Elektro or Cherno. I usually go there right after a respawn, kill 200 Zs and gear up, then move up north. Only time I ever managed to successfully group up with another person, was in Stary Sobor of all places, having looked at a bunch of people encountering each other without opening fire. Figured it was safe to join them then, and teamed up with a guy who was waiting for his friend to get there. He was in a bandit skin, by the way. Probably got it for the same reasons I got mine. The three of us ended up finding a Huey on a hospital rooftop and had a blast trying to defend it from the ton of other players who could see that thing on the roof from miles away. But with the current way people react to others, I just don't take the chance. I still try to help people if they're being chased by Zs, but I also make a point of doing it either from a tall and escape-able building, or from at least fifty meters distance. It's especially fun at dawn or dusk, to just methodically one-shot four Zs chasing a guy through the streets. I like to imagine how scary it must be for the guy, and then how awesome he must think of it being :P The most tense moments for me is when I encounter someone I hadn't seen, without him seeing me either. I looted a barn this morning, and while I was downstairs behind some of the crates, a player came in and started ruffling through stuff. He left again after checking two piles, and I don't think he ever saw me. But my heart was WAY up in my throat as I watched him through the tiny space between those stacked crates. It was just blind, dumb luck that I was out of sight when he came in. And it'd happened to me once before, with two guys coming in. I didn't wanna announce myself at that time, as I'd have no way of escaping without them seeing me, so I ended up shooting one of them as he came around and saw me behind the crates. His mate ran outside, and I exited through the opposite gate to the one he used. We had a chat in Side and there were no hard feelings, I never chased the other guy or looted his friend. Wasn't too far from the shore, so the dead guy just came back for his stuff. But man, this game has to be the single most tense game I've played yet. I'm scared to log in right now, 'cus I don't wanna get shot dead and lose my stuff. I should really try to find some Europeans to game with soon, so I can have some backup when I play. -
Is it green with a dual-blade rotor system and one m240 on each side? Or is it grey, with a quad-blade rotor system and GAU-17/A Miniguns? Sounds like you might have found the latter version, which isn't repairable but rather the infamous "Loot Copter", which also doesn't actually have loot yet.
