  1. I've got my game installed on a 6gb ramdisk, I didn't really notice any fps increase (maybe +1 or 2 fps) but it does seem to help loading times, for instance I get to the main menu quite a bit faster than before I had the Ramdisk in place.
  2. I don't think there's anything wrong with private hives... actually I think I'd rather prefer such a server because it just promotes players coming back to the same server and creating an actual community. Now from what I've read the private hives in the mod got all kinds of options to play with making the majority of them pretty crap. I'm hoping that in the SA there will be an option for a private hive, but keep the options regarding difficulty and the spawning system out of their hands.
  3. I have no idea how they did it in the 'follow up' mods of DayZ (I only played the original mod and now SA), but I'll give my input on the subject regardless: - Instead of players being able to plot down houses on the map I'd rather see mechanics for fortification of existing buildings and rooms with different degrees of another player being able to break-in (e.g. a boarded up door with a couple of planks and nails is just going to take a couple of axe swings, but a pristine lock (which should be extremely rare) would take a pristine lockpick (also pretty rare) and some luck). - Have the cupboards and closets act as storage units (which can also be made a bit extra secure by attaching handcuffs or padlocks, which again can be picked by varying degrees of lockpick (e.g. pristine handcuff can be picked by a worn lockpick and for worn handcuffs a damaged lockpick might suffice) or you could use a screwdriver and have a chance of slipping and cutting yourself or use your axe and probably damage quite a bit of the loot. - This game has: firestations, supermarkets, policestations, trainstations, cafes, hotels.... but where are the banks? I would love to see some bank themed buildings, perhaps they could be fortified and the safety storage boxes / vaults restored so a clan could run a legit bank and keep people's excessive/prized gear safe. Maybe make it so that the only way to open a security box is with the corresponding key (effectively making your shit in the storage box safe from anyone until you log back in again and risk the chance of losing the key). So this would be the most secure way to store some extra stuff, but the risk is that it's at fixed locations on the map (the banks) so it's most likely going to be a bandit hotspot. - The main thing I think that should be prevented with any type of housing/storage is that it should be bound to your current life. I admit, I've been rolling with a clan in the mod and we've hoarded shit like crazy and that's exactly why I think that should be the case. Hoarding and getting almost instantly reequipped after death takes away from the game, every new life should be hard as shit again (not stating that that's currently the case). It might not be 100% realistic (but neither is your new guy exactly knowing the location of a tent of a recently deseased person), but when an owner of a tent or idle car (a car that hasn't been driven by the owner for some time (the owner being just the last guy driving it)) dies they should despawn as well. Anyway my 2 cents on housing. edit: also laying traps around would be quite nice, making any aspirant burglar extra weary when a door doesn't swing open when he tries to (besides the bear traps from the mod I'm also thinking rigged shotguns triggered by tripwire (maybe that would be too easy to troll people with..))
  4. And if you don't feel like risking your neck at those places Zyry mentioned you can check the dark wood rectangle barns, inside the wrecks of cars and the piano building or school for a mosin.
  5. Some of you probably know this already, but for those who don't here's a quick tip to drag along two primary weapons. - Put your primary on your back. - Right click the second primary you want to carry around in the vicinity window and select put X in hands or press 'f' / middle mouse when looking at it. - Now you have two weapons; be careful however each time you switch to another item in your hand the secondary primary will drop to the ground (so you'll have to pick it up again after checking compass, eating, drinking etc). - You'll be out of breath constantly because you can't run with your fists out. When you're logging it's in a magical place in your inventory or on the ground, which makes me wonder if you're supposed to be able to do this or wether its an exploit/bug.
  6. I've thought about posting an idea like this, holding back because I figured I'd get flamed to death. But yeah I would like some playable instruments to add a little more flavour, I liked how they did it in Lord of the Rings Online (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQKJuzhmFdw) but finding sheet music and automatically performing said song might be an easier solution. Now I might be wrong on this but I think a lot of those classic campfire folksongs (such as kumbaya m'lord) aren't bound to copyright because the original author is long lost and forgotten and the song has become public domain (like lullabies). Also if that isn't the case I'm sure Rocket knows someone in his environment who can fiddle on an acoustic guitar and record some (basic)tunes.
  7. Beans for the Punch out music, bringing back memories :)
  8. Ideally? 500+ if the map gets a bit more expanded to the north (or any other direction). Realistically I'm hoping he can push the boundary to 128 players.
  9. Have you even read his post? He mentioned no skill trees and his idea is actually quite subtle, fair and devote of intentional grinding. There are some areas that might be a bit exploitable, but the advantage gained from these skills over a fresh spawn is subtle enough to discourage people afking for long periods. Plus you won't gain an unfair advantage in combat situations, (re)read his post and give it a second thought.
  10. Insecurity complexes, low self-esteem and the general need to be a dick when under the shroud of anonimity.
  11. The one in the pic is the best one, because it's the only octogonal shaped traffic sign, so you can recognize it as a stop sign from both sides. Enjoy that useless fact.
  12. To be fair the vampires were quite nice, somehow every other similar situation I've seen the assailants have to turn in to militant dicks. That's some Stanford Prison Experiment shit brought to practice. By the way I'm not condoning that kind of behaviour (ingame at least :P), it's just nice to see some variation now and then.
  13. They're either not well-armed or completely disorganized if they allow someone to come within axing proximity. On topic: Ofcourse bandits and murderers are needed for this game, but the risk/reward needs tweaking so there's more of a balance. Kills for the lulz should be minumum because of the zombie threat and difficulty of surviving, but both those aspects are not where they need to be to make this the cutthroat game it should be.
  14. I normally don't KoS, but when I do you can be sure as heck it'll be some religious nut. Probably I'll rp along but irl I just abhore religion (this is NOT an invitation to turn it into a religion/atheism thread).
  15. To be able to choose an AtoC setting you must have AA at least on low.
  16. Great I'm not the only one who sees the rp potential of DayZ, I'll be keeping an eye on this! Btw is it American/European/Somewhere else based? I'm european myself but if I have to I'll sacrifice some latency for a decent playerbase. Just don't go too crazy on the rules, looking at the dayzrp site I'm not fond of some of the rules they have in place... also they can be a source for drama (not the good kind) and it can take away some of those moments that make DayZ; for instance what do you do when you get yourself in a mexican standoff with a few parties? The KoS rules can prevent the unpredictability of such situations and the situation might have to be diffused always because the one firing the first shot will most likely be violating a rule.
  17. I figured out the other day that DayZ doesn't pick up any signal from my usb mic (blue snowball) and I think it wants a signal from my onboard mic plugin (which has nothing plugged in). I've tried looking in the options and rummaged through the config files to see if I can set my mic, but I can't find it anywhere. So does anybody know how to fix this? Edit: It was already the default in the sound setttings, I disabled the other device lets hope that works. Thanks for your input.
  18. Things like these... I'd take less advanced and self-made versions too.
  19. Yeah this is a major pet peeve of mine as well. The only times I've been killed is approaching barracks as careful as I could only to get greeted inside by someone who was definately not there when I scouted the place. I just came out of a 3 hours session on a server that just restarted; I made the SW to NW trek and every town I hit was untouched and every barracks pillaged clean and probably visited by hoppers every 5 minutes... But I reckon it's alpha and there's probably plans in the making to combat this, so for now I just avoid barracks unless I know I have the firepower/backup (maybe going in alone with an empty m4 and an axe was a mistake on my part).
  20. They should be shuffling about when they're unprovoked, but once they get a hint of you in the area they'll come storming for ya. They should definately have varying speeds though, some faster than a player sprinting.
  21. I can't deny I stopped reading at 'NPC', but ok here goes: #1: I'm all for some sort of skill system based on attempts as long as it's implemented elegantly and doesn't make the game too easy over time. #2: Your first sentence says it... now I'm not going to flame you, but NPCs anything other than zeds is a big no-no for me. And a safe haven policed by NPCs? No thanks, I'd rather see a player group take over one of the smaller villages and create that safehaven themselves. #3: Trading is something that should come naturally between players, I hope once the rarity system is in place and more diverse loot gets patched in this might actually happen. Ofcourse it would still be a freaking dangerous ordeal (like it should be) so you'd better have some friends to back you up if something goes haywire. #4: Same as before, no farmable npcs pretty please. If they can accomplish making the zombies an actual threat (image 100 zeds roaming the streets of Cherno and they'd all come running if you're bold enough to fire a shot) then that should be enough reason for random short or long term grouping and if that makes it so it's nigh impossible to even come near a barracks solo that'll solve server hopping too (except maybe for organised clans, but then again I'm still advocating having characters tied to servers). #5: Again no arbitrary systems, if a bandit pissed you off that much you should place the bounty yourself (but you'll probably need a friend to cough up the reward, unless someone will do it for a battery) and hope someone will go after him. Now at the game's current state that would be rather hard, but once radios/vehicles are in the game you could call it out. And again if characters would be tied to the server he couldn't just flee to another server, making bounty hunting an actual occupation. #6: This one could have potential if the messages where ambiguous enough that it's not always clear and sometimes flat out wrong. Although I think it might be better to just leave this to observation; for instance if you meet someone and he's immediately fumbling around to get his weapon out and not responding to your greeting he's probably not going to be very nice. If someone does respond and approaches without a weapon drawn and you find terms on which to group then maybe take the risk and go for it. If you notice suspicious behaviour down the line you might want to inquire about it or part ways (anecdote from my mod days: I once repaired a van with a stranger in Berezino, we were grouped, cruizing and talking for about an hour, until I notice he's getting less talkative and asks me to change direction, I figured his buddies came on teamspeak and he's planning something so I ended up booting him from the car and went on my own merry way). #7 & 8: Again not a fan of artificial systems.. the whole black and white hero/bandit thing needs to go. There should be more weight and benefit to someone's life other than his gear; an elegant skill system might help. #9: And because it's easy gratification. If shooting a gun near Cherno actually becomes a weighted descision because of zeds actually posing a threat, they would think twice about killing some random newly spawned. Also endgame should come in the form of fortificating buildings, repairing and maintaining a vehicle if you're lucky, maybe the abbility to repair some prominent structures (Green Mountain to broadcast all over Chernarus, or a power generator to light up a small village), farming and hunting could become a thing, they could introduce more and more complex diseases and illnessess with different approaches to cure them (doing it with makeshift items yourself might take days/weeks, but dropping by a hospital bed in that hospital a medic clan managed to get operable and it'll dissipate in 5-10 minutes (maybe longer and just bring a damn book)). There's a whole bunch more I can think of that I'd rather see than have npc quests shovelled in that will only feel stale after completing them once.
  22. I beg to differ, it just needs a broad selection of options to partake in and the possibilities could be endless. It's just too bad that quite a few people tend to have the creative capabilities of a rock.
  23. I don't think there should be an artificial story in place, I would like it however if you could leave recorded messages onn taperecorders... but since it will only server a niche rp role and not much functionality I don't expect it somewhere high up the to-do list, if it's even there at all.
  24. 1 to 6 + 8 = Yes! 7: I like 3rd person for screenshots :) But yeah I played on a 1st person only server on the mod for a while and I liked it, but I don't see how taking away the choice is going to help.
  25. Ikr, cleaning those bitches rotten vagina fluids off the kitchen floor is taking the piss out of me too. On a more serious note; I noticed some more zeds, but the server just restarted so I accounted it to that... still not nearly enough to be a threat.
